[attr="class","appFIELD"]outspoken in her younger moons, hazelstar only grew more jaded after she had her kits. having seen her mate, who was a constant nag, in her opinion, pass away when their kits were apprentices, she long ago gave up on trying to please others. always a fighter, she's hurt more feelings than a kinder, more cat-pleasing molly, but she pays it no mind.
intelligent, hazelstar's also been prone to a few vengeful thoughts. one of her first actions as leader led to quite a few border skirmishes, but she learned quickly that some things are better left up to discussion, not tooth and claw. nonetheless, she can't help but make a few jabs here and there when it comes to gatherings. it's just in her nature - and she truly thinks shadowclan is the best clan there is, and the she-cat would certainly put her life on the line for it.
in typical interactions with her clanmates, she can be short-tempered, but at the end of the day, hazelstar cares for them very much. never one to decline a walk or chat, it's common for her to take visitors into her den for private discussions. her patience for any insolence runs low, and hazelstar has been known to punish apprentices and even warriors when they step too far out of line.
with her friends, hazelstar is a raucous jokester, known for teasing and jokes and a lighter side. becoming a friend may be a little bit tough, but those that want a viciously loyal, loving friend - and all the prickly bits that come with it - would need a thick skin to get through to the leader.
within the marshier, muddier parts of shadowclan, she does not tread lightly. getting her paws dirty is just part of the luscious landscape that compliments their thick, pine forest. though now a leader, the shadowclan she-cat most definitely still helps out with clan chores, leading or participating in patrols quite frequently. she's quite "paws-on" when it comes to her clan.

in the dying light of the summer sun, lizardstripe and petalnose found themselves falling in love. having been the best of friends for many moons, it took them by surprise one moon, out watching sunsets and catching fireflies in the fields near the edge of shadowclan territory. it'd been a mess to get here, with petalnose always telling the tom about her crushes, rejections, and everything in between.
only when her handsome, tabby friend began to spend time with jasminefur did petalnose realize her own true, deep feelings. lizardstripe had already been there, suffering in silence for quite some time, praying to starclan that his feelings may pass and he could lead a normal life. one night, as they lay cuddled up beneath the stars, he confessed, quietly, and all at once. "i know," she replied, blinking as she looked into his deep, green eyes. "i feel the same."
///
it wasn't a surprise to any cat that within the next year, they found themselves pregnant, with a leaf-fall due date. raising kits in the off-season was hard, when food was sparse and morale was low. but, it was the best winter of lizardstripe and petalnose's lives. when their three kits were born, the world opened further, like a blossoming flower bud.
they both took to being parents quite easily, making strides with one another and making sure their kits always knew they were loved. hazelkit, dusk-kit, and cherrykit were healthy, rambunctious, and quite obnoxious for the other queens in the nursery, who were mostly rearing their nearlyapprentice-aged kits by then. when the first six moons had passed, it was a relief to them.
petalnose spent ages grooming the three of them for their name ceremonies, embarassing cherrykit most of all. dusk-kit loved the preening, beaming with pride. surprisingly, it was hazelkit who was the most nervous. before becoming an apprentice, she'd been the least interested in warrior life, though she held great respect for their leader, deputy, and medicine cat. "i think i'm destined for something greater than just being a warrior, mother." the ambitious kit would often daydream aloud, to petalnose's surprise.
lizardstripe quite enjoyed her dreams, and he supported her the entire way. through his friendships, he managed to acquire the current deputy as hazelpaw's mentor, setting her up for success early. once she met with her mentor, her doubts dissipated. hazelpaw quickly became one of the most dedicated apprentices, doting on the elders, picking up extra patrols, and training with her friends whenever the deputy was busy.
trouble came in the form of a tom named jasperpaw, who was three moons older and wickedly handsome. a bright, fiery red tabby with the greenest eyes a cat had ever seen. he was strongly built - sturdy - and hazelpaw didn't know what to do once he took interest in her. "well, aren't you a pretty little thing," he'd whispered in her ear on their first patrol together. scoffing, she'd rolled her eyes, ignoring him. but her heart had other plans.
to be the center of someone's attention was more what cherrypaw would have been interested in, however. hazelpaw hardly knew what to do with a boy! her sister teased her relentlessly, pushing her to talk with the other apprentice more, to fall in love, to bring pride to their family. "i don't even want to have kits!" she hissed one day, as they discussed jasperpaw under the pale moonlight, on their way to a gathering.
"you're a waste of good looks then, hazelpaw, really!" cherrypaw huffed, infuriated with her, per usual. but what did looks have to do with fighting, hunting, providing for their clan? a rift continued to fill the space between them, and hazelpaw let it happen. eventually, jasperpaw grew bored and went to cherrypaw, seeking another molly to fill his time toying with.
losing the tom didn't bother her; it was a rather large relief, and hazelpaw instead set her sights on becoming a warrior. but, when cherrypaw discovered she was pregnant, the world crashed around them. "what do you mean you're pregnant?!" hazelpaw had shrieked at her sister when she'd finally confided in her. the kits were jasper's, and he had just received his full name - jaspereye.
a pregnant apprentice could be humiliating to the clan, but hazelpaw did her best to support cherrypaw. when jaspereye found out, however, it became a problem. he didn't want the kits, though cherrypaw did. the dilemma only continued to grow, to the point where lizardstripe became aware of what had happened. furious, he did his best to keep petalnose unaware of the situation, hoping to find a way to keep cherrypaw safe.
when she disappeared one day, however, petalnose was hysterical - as was the rest of the family. jaspereye, too, was nowhere to be found. a patrol found cherrypaw, clinging to life by a whisker. bleeding out near thunderpath, jaspereye had pushed her in front of a monster, and her body had been put under incredible pressure and stress.
in the medicine cat den that night, with a broken leg and bruises beneath her mottled fur, cherrypaw gave birth to two pre-term, stillborn kits, and her screams could be heard throughout shadowclan's camp. jaspereye was never found.
///
hazelstorm was named a warrior at twelve moons, alongside her brother, duskcloud. they saw cherrypaw frequently, but a resentment came between the siblings when she was held back for an additional two moons, recovering from her injuries and also as punishment. any interactions amongst them were bitter, laced with spite, and simply just uncomfortable.
nonetheless, hazelstorm remained closed with her brother. they were never best friends, but they did rely on each other for support every now and again. it made sense, then, that duskcloud's friend russetstrike was the first to successfully woo hazelstorm. still tentative when it came to love, it took nearly an entire four seasons for the two of them to become inseparable.
their personalities clashed, but they found passion between them, and once they finally declared themselves mates, hazelstorm was already a moon into her pregnancy. it was a joyous occasion, and duskcloud was elated to see the two of them together. however, when the kits came, russetstrike's ugly side came out.
first came the accusations that the kits were not his. they had not been official mates when the pregnancy began, but hazelstorm had hardly looked at another cat, and she has certainly not been alone with anyone in that manner. however, russetstrike was jealous, grew possessive of his mate and offspring, and hazelstorm's mental health subsequently began to tank.
when she finally saw her kits become apprentices, it took everything in her not to resign herself to a fate that was similar to what cherryfang's could have been moons ago. but monsters were scary, and, well, hazelstorm didn't want to die just yet. burying herself into her duties, she inadvertently ignored her children - and, of course, her mate.
a break-up wasn't possible, not with russetstrike's anger, so instead hazelstorm just became more and more moody. eventually, it reached a breaking point. his constant nagging and abusive behavior was enough to catch the attention of duskcloud, who protected his family at all costs. between the two of them, hazelstorm and duskcloud began plotting ways to resolve the situation.
murder was, of course, out of the question. but, a trap of sorts could work just as well. how could they lure russetstrike out of camp and into a precarious situation? hazelstorm left it up to duskcloud, as she was stuck in camp for a half-moon after her mate lashed out at her, leaving her with a barrage of painful, infected scratches along her side.
she never quite knew the whole story, just that a patrol brought in russetstrike's body one dreary afternoon. playing the part of a mournful mate, she laid beside his body, her nose in her fur. hazelstorm cried but only from joy. at last, she was free from him.
///
without her life being under the control of another cat, hazelstorm began to truly blossom as a warrior. leading patrols, training gaggles of apprentices, and doing everything she could to better shadowclan was how she spent most of her time. it was a delightful surprise when she was selected as deputy, and it brought her great joy to be recognized as a great a warrior.
leadership came easily to her, even with her crankiness and sharp tongue. her intentions were good, and her anger ferocious, but they balanced one another out. impressing her became a feat in and of itself that apprentices would often challenge each other to do difficult tasks just to see their friends praised or, more likely, scolded.
her heart full, it was a sad day when the previous leader passed, having been quite elderly and spending many, many moons leading shadowclan. but, receiving her lives and taking her place as the leader of her clan only made hazelstar proud of everything she had done and everything she'd been through. it had all been worth it; her dreams from her kithood days came true.

[attr="class","appOOCfield"]Leader Policies: Hazelstar is likely to have split her clanmates into two pools: those who respect her hard-pawed yet loving rule and those who find her altogether too harsh. She tries to be as fair as possible, trying not to give preference to her kits and family, and instead treating every ShadowClanner with respect. Incredibly loyal, her clan comes first most of all, then perhaps the Warrior Code. Despite what many might believe about ShadowClan, Hazelstar is open to bolstering the clan's ranks with the odd loner, rogue, or even kittypet - so long as they can prove their worth, dedicate their lives to bettering the clan, and renouncing their former loyalties. Even when it comes to cross-clan relationships, she can be a bit lax - though any kits brought by cross-clean relationships better be raised in ShadowClan. Quite indifferent when it comes to ThunderClan, Hazelstar's suspicions instead run high with WindClan, who she finds to be flighty and a bit fidgety. Their proximity to the open lands near the edge of ShadowClan territory also gives her a bit of a distaste for them. When it comes to allies, Hazelstar definitely prefers RiverClan to the others, as it is typically found that they cross the Thunderpath much less often than the other two rival clans. |
