In the dark of night, a sound like thunder rumbles through the moors..
*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
The next morning, Eaglestar is nowhere to be found. His nest is empty, and cold. A patrol is put together to search for him. They comb the territory before turning their attention toward the outmost reaches.
Here they come across an odd sight. Earth has been torn into, like the claws of some great beast raked across it. Soil is upturned, and huge ruts fill with small puddles of water from a short rain that morning. There is no sign of what caused the damage, and no sign of Eaglestar, save for a few tufts of fur that just barely carries his scent.
A patrol needs to be organized which will discover the damage and signs of Eaglestar.

And last but not least Ashenflight, a calm and thoughtful cat, one that darkfire was sure would counteract his own ambitious personality. his hope would be that the three of them would help bring him clarity to what they might find. and what they found was not clear. not clear at all. darkfire led the patrol out to where he heard the rumble the night before. what they found was groundbreaking, pun not intended. for there were literally ginormous claw marks in the earth like an enormous badger had been digging there. unfortunately, eaglestar was nowhere to be seen, not even a trace of him. "we need to search the rest of the moors." he said, slight panic in his voice. "maybe he's just on patrol around the border." there would be time to study this later. now they needed to find eaglestar. |

all the pieces lie where they fell... ♥ Coyotehaze could feel the unspoken tension in the air, running through their pelts like the electricity that hovers before a storm. It was unlike Eaglestar to be gone from camp for so long without telling Darkfire or another warrior, and though she would have loved to hope for the best, something told her that this bode nothing good. “Keep close,” she warned Doepaw, trusting the young apprentice to keep on her heels. She didn’t know what had caused the horrible rips in the earth, or where Eaglestrike was, but in case there was some awful predator about she didn’t want to risk Doepaw getting out of sight. There was another reason for her caution. The strange stirrings she felt in her womb filled her with a deep anxiety, even as it brought her joy as well. But she hadn’t had the chance to speak to Vipereye since she’d realized what was going on, and if something dangerous was on the loose… “Scent anything?” she called to Ashenflight, pausing to sniff at a usual scent marking only to find it stale. ooc: ❝ darkfire ❞ doepaw Ashenflight ♡

the moment he'd heard that eaglestar had not returned to his nest at all the previous night, ashenflight's senses had all been immediately on high alert. especially considering the strange rumbling that had disturbed his sleep briefly that night. accompanying darkfire, coyotehaze and her apprentice doepaw, ashenflight tagged along at the back of the patrol, coming to a stop as they reached the very edge of windclan territory and came across a most strange sight indeed.
the soil in front of them had been disturbed in a most terrifying way. as if giant claws had gouged into the ground, uprooting dirt and grass. small puddles rested in the holes left behind by whatever caused this. it was too big to have been caused by any wild creature; his best guess was likely some twolegs. but why would they have done this? there seemed to be no rhyme or reason for the destruction in front of them. "we need to search the rest of the moors." darkfire's voice, edged with panic, floated back to him. "maybe he's just on patrol around the border." as much as ashenflight desperately wanted that to be true, he had a nasty feeling that wasn't the case.
"scent anything?" coyotehaze called out to him now, as she began to explore as well. with a deep concerned frown, ashenflight approached the damage and began sniffing around. the scent of earth and water overpowered much of anything else, even the scent markers, but as he looked around his sharp eye managed to catch something unusual at the scene. padding forward to get a closer look, he craned his head downward. a small tuft of fur, just barely enough to see but recognize nonetheless. immediately his fur prickled in alarm as a very faint scent wafted from the tuft. "there's-- there's some fur here." he rumbled in response, raising his head quickly. "i can smell eaglestar's scent, but just barely... it's very faint." but what did that mean? where was their leader? notes: text here

• D O E P A W •Darkfire had gathered a small patrol that consisted of, Darkfire, Ashenflight, her mentor Coyotehaze, and Doepaw herself. During the night there was a terrible roaring that had woken the young cat up. She wasn't sure what the sound was but something made the young cat feel uncomfortable. She could sense something was wrong the next morning as she left the apprentice's den. The warriors on the patrol seemed very worried. From what Doepaw could gather, Eaglestar was missing and hadn't been in his nest during the night and his mysterious disappearance could be linked to the rumbling. Doepaw followed the warriors closely, and her fur stood on end when they neared the spot where the sound had seem to come from. There was a strong earthly smell and as they drew nearer, the young cat saw that the earth was dug up. There were deep claw marks in the ground, claw marks that were too big for any predator that the young cat could think of. There didn't seem to be any signs that Eaglestar was in the spot where they stood, and whatever made those deep claw marks that unearthed dirt and grass also left no trace. Everyone seemed to become more uneasy and the feeling panic seemed to arise. Darkfire had instructed them to look around the moor, and though the apprentice thought it would have been a better idea to split up to cover more ground, she decided to listen to Coyotehaze who instructed her to stay close. The young cat could tell her mentor was worried and Doepaw thought it would be best to stick close just in case there was danger lurking around. Doepaw sniffed around, trying to find any familiar scent of Eaglestar or any unknown scents that could have caused rumbling and destruction. She immediately lifted her head when she heard Ashenflight call out that he had found tufts of the Windclan leader's fur. Doepaw bounded towards where the dark grey warrior was. She sniffed at the tuft of fur and indeed the scent was faint. The apprentice looked around, "Does his scent lead anywhere? Maybe we can find more fur somewhere?" She know it would be unlikely that they would find anymore fur left behind, but the apprentice wanted to stay as optimistic as she could during this grim situation. [attr="class","hiraeth"]彼らは私が選ばれた人だと言う | [attr="class","achee"] [attr="class","castleonthehill"] ❝ darkfire nearly cried out when ashenflight found eaglestar's scent. but he stopped himself. he became incredibly quiet as he pulled himself together and then silently padded over to the spot in the gutted earth where ashenflight had found eaglestar's fur. he studied it himself, taking in his leader's scent for what he now believed to be the last time. he needed to be strong, for his clan. but what did strong look like? there was no scent trail, no sign of the unknown monster that had taken his leader. what was the appropriate thing to do? if he had them search the whole of the moores would he be seen as panicked? if he decided right here and now that his leader was dead would he be seen as too eager to be leader? there was no stopping the deep sadness that he felt standing where he knew eaglestar had once stood. but that sadness couldn't be acted upon. there was no body. so how could he say that his leader was dead? but he was missing. and it definitely had to do with this here rut in the ground. after a long silence, he realized he had to say something, and with a soft sigh, he backed away from the upturned earth and addressed his patrol. "i think it's best if we bring news of eaglestar's disappearance to the camp and decide what to do from there." his voice was calm and edged with sadness. he didn't believe there was much that could be done. there would need to be more patrols though, especially at night. or... maybe there shouldn't be anyone patrolling at night. this leading thing was going to be harder than he thought. |

all the pieces lie where they fell... ♥ At Ashenflight’s announcement, Coyotehaze moved to his side, leaning as he did to scent the fur. Sure enough, there was no mistaken Eaglestrike’s familiar smell, and the dread in her stomach only increased. “Why had he been out alone?” she wondered out loud, lashing her tail as she lifted her gaze to scan the landscape, hoping to spot some glimpse of Eaglestrike that would assure them their fears had been a simple misunderstanding. Instead she saw only Doepaw bounding over, bending to smell the fur herself. “It’s faint, but you could be right. Go have a look, but don’t stray more than a few fox lengths,” she told her apprentice, fur still ruffled on her spine as she glanced to Darkfire to see what he seemed to think of the matter. The dismay on his face told her everything, and Coyotehaze gave a resigned sigh. Even so, she was loathe to give up so quickly, even if it was a hopeless venture. “Perhaps Doepaw and I could circle around the far end of the territory,” she suggested, trying not to appear too desperate. It would also give her the chance to see if such danger had neared RiverClan territory… “Just in case.” ooc:

Ashenflight took a small step back as Darkfire came to investigate his findings. Indeed, it seemed as if Eaglestar had been here. But why? Why had he come out here alone? And just what exactly had happened to him? It was almost as if he'd disappeared without a trace, save for the small tufts of fur left behind and a stale scent lingering in the air.
"i think it's best if we bring news of eaglestar's disappearance to the camp and decide what to do from there." Ashenflight spared a glance in Darkfire's direction and nodded sympathetically. He couldn't imagine how the other tom must be feeling. It was all so very mysterious. Was Eaglestar dead, or merely just missing? If the latter, would they even be able to find him? Was Darkfire going to have to step up as their new leader? Ashenflight gave a small sigh, ears twitching as Coyotehaze spoke. “Perhaps Doepaw and I could circle around the far end of the territory.” The gray tom hummed softly, glancing around at their surroundings. “Just in case.”
"I think for right now, heading back to camp would be best." Ashenflight spoke reluctantly. "We have no idea what kind of creature or thing caused this. It could still be out here somewhere; we don't want the two of you to go missing as well." His tail lashed as he glanced back at Darkfire. "We can return to camp and inform the clan of Eaglestar's disappearance. From there, we can maybe send out some more patrols to scour the rest of our territory for any signs of Eaglestar or whatever caused... this. It'll be more safe with larger patrols, I think, with less risk of cats simply disappearing." It didn't feel right to just give up on their leader. If there was any hope at all of finding him, Ashenflight wanted to hold onto that. "... Those are just my suggestions, anyway." It felt a bit strange to be taking charge like that. Ashenflight glanced away sheepishly, deciding to shut his mouth now. notes: text here

• D O E P A W •She had never seen her mentor nor the other two warriors so uneasy before, but Doepaw began to sniff around when Coyotehaze gave her permission to look around a little. The apprentice moved a few tail lengths away from the rest of the patrol, trying to find any other faint scent of their leader. She kept her ears perked up, listening to the older cats discuss the next plan of action. The young cat knew that the situation was grim, but Doepaw couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement when she overheard Coyotehaze offer that both herself and Doepaw could search around the territory. Her paws itched to search the territory instead of heading back to camp where they would waste time doing nothing. The apprentice turned her attention back to finding any other trace left behind by Eaglestar, but found none. Sighing she turned around and trotted back to the warriors, just in time to hear Ashenflight suggest that the patrol should just return to camp to deliver the news to the rest of the clan. Disappointed, Doepaw returned to Coyotehaze’s side. “Shouldn’t we search for Eaglestar before we lose Eaglestar’s scent?” Doepaw pointed out, looking up at the warriors. “The scent trail is already so faint. What if there’s other signs of Eaglstar, but is faint like the one here. They might disappear or fade even more if we return to camps and take the time to organize patrols.” Tags:// ❝ darkfire ❞ coyotehaze Ashenflight ♡

all the pieces lie where they fell... ♥ Though Coyotehaze was loathe to relent, she knew that Ashenflight and Darkfire were right. It would do no good if she got herself or Doepaw hurt…or if whatever had disappeared Eaglestar claimed one of them too. “Very well,” she consented, nodding her approval despite Ashenflight’s slight embarrassment at the authority he’d suddenly shown. He was her senior after all, and a warrior she respected enough to obey without too much push back. All the same, Doepaw’s own opinions rang true in Coyotehaze’s ears. She didn’t disagree, but she knew it wasn’t the place of an apprentice to challenge a senior warrior’s decision…or their deputy’s. “No,” she told Doepaw, brushing her tail comfortingly over the young molly’s spine, “Darkfire and Ashenflight haven given us our orders. But you can be sure that we’ll both be on one of the next patrols that go out.” With that she turned back toward camp. “And let’s be quick about it,” she said with finality, leading the dash back to camp at a rapid pace. ooc: doepaw Ashenflight ♡ ❝ darkfire ❞

"I really, really hate when you get passive aggressive, brother." Oakfire growled at Hickoryfrost, who had said something snide under his breath, though not really, because Oakfire could definitely still hear it. The solid white tom approached his gray and white bicolored sibling, whom had his back turned and was putting on his best innocent face that he could come up with. "Hunting for the clan and supporting it is an honorable thing and our job. Maybe you're bored of it because you don't see the value in it. It helps everyone..." Oakfire let his voice trail off, as he knew he was just wasting his breath at this point. His tail flicked in annoyance. Oakfire let out a long, exasperated sigh and turned away quickly, his eyes back on the fresh-kill pile that needed to be refilled. The rest of the warriors had gone out on patrol, and while Oakfire understood that he and his brother were left behind to do some hunting, it still bothered him that he wasn't asked to come along. Or at least take Hickoryfrost so that he could finally stop grumbling about being bored and how he deserved more than to just be the "fetching boy" as he once called it.
Some shapes on the horizon brought Oakfire's attention away from his brother, a welcome distraction. The patrol was back along with Darkfire... but Eaglestar was not among them. Concern and some small amount of dread washed over the young warrior. He watched in silence as Darkfire climbed up to Tallrock and called for a clan meeting. Oakfire spared a look at Hickoryfrost, but then walked to the base of Tallrock and reclined into a sit.
This couldn't be good...

Hickoryfrost had a very difficult time not rolling his eyes at the thought of hunting.... again. Where was the clan border skirmishes that he'd heard so much about as an apprentice? What about natural disasters or something other than the routine and mundane to look forward to? Oakfire, his oh so loyal and happy to do everything brother of course was going to lecture him if he said anything about it... but at least it would bring Hickoryfrost at least a little entertainment.
"Oh joy... rabbit again. And rabbit tomorrow. And rabbit the next day with a side of field mouse. How. Freaking. Wonderful." He had muttered it, but certainly loud enough for his brother to hear. And just as predictable as moths to a light, Oakfire started to defend hunting of all things. Hickoryfrost just stared at him... honestly looking confused as to why Oakfire was so frustrated. His bi-colored eyes even flicked to the left for a moment and back again as if he were honestly confused and had no idea what was going on. Unfortunately, Oakfire just... gave up. No long-winded, cringey hero speeches this time for Hickoryfrost to mock later.... nothing. Oh stars... even you are getting boring, my sibling. Then he watched his brother's body stiffen and followed his gaze. Ah! The patrol was back.
Hickoryfrost stared... noticing that Eaglestar was still not among his clan like he should be. So where did he go? He shared his brother's silence and watched Darkfire hop to Tallrock and call for a clan meeting. Hickoryfrost obediently joined Oakfire at the base and sat down, his eyes focused and attentive on Windclan's Deputy.... perhaps... new leader? Were things finally going to be interesting?
