weak morning sunlight filtered through the canopy of trees which stretched high above thunderclan’s territory. the sounds of early morning life stirring, the tiny scratching of small rodents and the sleepy morning call of the birds – were he hunting, pepperstorm would pay rather more attention to them. life, as was well known by any cat born and bred within the forest, raised on the taste of fresh kills, surrounded them at all times. even in the depths of leafbare, it was there – though sometimes it evaded them.
rowanmask had taught him most of what he knew, how to listen, how to look, which scent trails to follow and which to ignore – the latter skill he would argue up and down had been intentional. pepperstorm was adamant that it was very much not, born instead of hunting down his wayward mentor whenever he disappeared in an attempted dereliction of his duty.
however, today he was hunting neither prey or cat, rather searching for the scent of something which didn’t belong in their forest. something which could present a potential risk to the clan; though, odds were it was nothing to be bothered by. he’d picked up of the scent of dog while on a hunting patrol the day before, it wasn’t out of place really, out by tallpines where the twolegs often brought the beasts contained and controlled on the cords which wrapped around their throats and made them gag and splutter when they tore against the holds at the first scent of cat. the dogs on the cords were not the dogs which concerned pepperstorm, it was the ones which had escaped their fences or were simply let loose upon the forest as the twologs wandered along well behind them.
he picked up the scent where they’d found it the night before, following the trail of scent and scuffed undergrowth along a winding trail up into tallpines. the odds were good that the dog presented no threat to them at all, simply out on an adventure before being hauled back to its twoleg nest, but pepperstorm found with predators it was always best to be certain. not that he intended on going anywhere near a dog, but ivystar and mistfall would need to know if it was still lingering around.
small black paws trotted along, patiently doubling back when the scent became chaotic, crossing itself and winding off in multiple directions to try and pick up the freshest trace to follow. this was what pepperstorm excelled at, the task which helped to quiet his usually chaotic thoughts, it was so easy to lose himself in the focus required and the early morning was the best time to catch and follow scents. he paused, flicking an ear and parting his jaws, casting for the direction required.
he turned a circle, casting about for signs beyond scent of the dog’s passage, honing in on a flattened patch of grass a short distance away with a satisfied little huff. he was about to set off again when a rustling nearby pulled him up short; he whirled, plumed tail puffing up and hackles spiking in alarm before the scent of thunderclan hit finally hit him. he forced his hackles down, inhaling sharply as he fought to get his heart rate back under control. he let his claws sink into the soft earth for a moment, still fluffed up tail lashing in frustration.
