[attr="class","boatscrollt"]her green irises were locked on to it, every little movement, every intake of oxygen. she didn’t even blink and she was very proud of herself for not doing so, despite the oncoming dryness beginning to catch up to her. another little toad had caught her eye while she was out doing… well nothing. it was her usual routine and she doubted anyone would notice her absence, besides maybe her mentor and some of the other apprentices. but they didn’t count - in her mind, at least.
she had been following after the toad for a while, mostly just playing around with it and chasing it through the pine wood. of course, she probably shouldn’t have been messing with a potential meal for herself - or her clan - but sagepaw wasn’t one to think too hard about things like that anyways. in the midst of being distracted with the little creature, sagepaw had found herself settled near the thunderpath. she could practically taste the hard asphalt, the smell hit her like a falling pinecone, but that surely didn’t stop her from leaving her slippery little friend behind.
sagepaw was huddled low to the ground, performing a semi-perfect hunter’s crouch thanks to the teachings of her mentor, badgernose. it was perfect in that she could mimic it without any issues, semi-perfect in that she quickly became bored with the move after sitting and watching the toad croak and groan for more time than was necessary. soon, she prepared herself to strike with a seemingly successful pounce - but with a small squealing croak, the toad had easily evaded her adolescent paws and was quickly scrambling away from the young apprentice, much to her disappointment.
she watched, slack-jawed, as the toad hopped across the thunderpath with little fear - besides its very clear fear of her, of course. maybe i shouldn’t skimp out on training, then i wouldn’t be outsmarted by toads, she thought as the toad had slowed to a stop across the way. it seemed to have forgotten that she was even there at all, which allowed sagepaw time to mentally gripe and hiss at the dumb thing from her spot behind it. of all the creatures to embarrass her, it had to be a slimy little cretin. a toad. safe to say, sagepaw was quite irritated at her lack of success.
with a huff, the she-cat straightened herself into a sitting position and went on to groom her paws a little - a licking of metaphorical wounds. i’m so lucky nobody was here to see that. how embarrassing she muttered with a slight show of her fangs. then she sighed, sagepaw would surely find something else to entertain herself with. she always did.
as if by a stroke of luck, new entertainment seemed to drop from the sky. what, she thought as her eyes became glued to a bright colored figure emerging from the treeline across the path. sagepaw watched in horror as the cat then quickly made do with her toad, easily catching it between their paws. my toad! she yowled at the other cat, her ears fused with the back of her skull at what she was seeing. a thunderclan cat had stolen her prey even after she had spent so much time and effort following it around the forest. sure it was food that she had rightfully lost but her bubbling anger still decided to rear its ugly face. you thief! toss that toad back over here right this instant!
