PERSONALITY
Since he was a kit, Sparrowpaw has been a dreamy tom. He was the only surviving kit of his small litter, and his mother was incredibly protective as a result. Luckily for her, Sparrowpaw never strayed far, often being found curled up at the edge of camp staring up into the sky and musing on the world around him. It got to the point when his mother had begun to think something was seriously wrong with him, but she was assured that he was just a bit unique.
As an apprentice, Sparrowpaw prefered daydreaming to training, and strategizing to practicing battle moves. Though this can sometimes led others to become frustrated with him, but Sparrowpaw never seemed to mind their anger, and criticism rolled off his back as easily as drops of water off duck feathers. It wasn't until his injury that he started to grow more serious, shaken into a depression as he felt even more different than his peers. Sparrowpaw began to doubt he'd ever make a good warrior, and even as an adult, these doubts sometimes still haunt him.
As a medicine cat Sparrowflight cares deeply for his peers and clanmates, and is often the first to offer a kind word and a warm side to lean upon when an apprentice has had a bad day. He loves his role in the clan, and is passionate about his duty as a healer. Though he sometimes leans a little too heavily on the wisdom of StarClan for guidance, theres few cats who doubt Sparrowflight's dedication to his work. Clan boundaries mean little to him if a cat is in trouble.

HISTORY
Sparrowkit was the only surviving member of his litter, of which one was stillborn and the other succumbed to illness soon after. As such Sparrowkit was a bit sheltered, and his mother kept him close at hand. He never minded, preferring to laze around day dreaming to playing with the other kits anyway. However, the one thing he always looked forward to was stories in the elders den. Even as an apprentice, Sparrowpaw continued visited the elders often, even volunteering to rid them of ticks in return for their stories. That’s about as far as his industriousness went, however, as he was often the first to ask to finish training or find an excuse to sleep in.
Just a few short nights into Sparrowpaw's apprenticeship, his mother fell ill. It was a sudden and severe sickness that killed her within days, leaving Sparrowpaw completely alone. This period of his live further cemented his obsession with StarClan and the afterlife, and he began to pester to medicine cat whenever he had a free moment.
What free time he had he spent tagging along behind the other apprentices. Ashpaw in particular was a cat that Sparrowpaw admired, the young tom being confident, skilled and clever, all qualities Sparrowpaw wished he himself had. This affection bloomed something more, though Sparrowpaw never spoke out about his feelings. He simply enjoyed what little time he got with the tom during occasional private training sessions and playful (at least on Sparrowpaw's end) spars.
It was during one of these sessions that Sparrowpaw suffered a life changing injury. He'd been scaling a tree, not realizing how high he had gone until it was too late. The brittle branches beneath his paws snapped, and he fell to the hard earth below. His leg was broken, and his life forever changed for another reason as well.
Just before he'd fell he'd seen the mountains.
They were in the distance, almost too far to fathom, but they called to him. As his legs healed and Sparrowpaw sank into a depression, the mountains became an obsession. One night, just as he had been beginning to learn to walk, Sparrowpaw disappeared from camp.
For 17 moons, no one saw fur nor scent of Sparrowpaw. Seasons passed, and many assumed him dead or a kittypet somewhere. Then, just as the season was turning to leaf fall for the second time since his departure, he returned. Sparrowpaw came with stories of a long journey, of mountain cats and cultures unknown. He had learned from them new uses of herbs and plants for medicine, and seemed to have grown more settled in his skin. With unbelievable stories in town, Sparrowpaw told RiverClan that he'd seen a sign from StarClan telling him it was time to come home.
Within the moon, Gorsepelt the RiverClan medicine cat, caught greencough. As he lay dying he named Sparrowpaw his successor, despite having never served an apprenticeship. This caused quite a bit of drama within the clan, but Sparrowpaw bore their suspicion and doubts with only soft promises to prove himself. He was given the name Sparrowflight, in remembrance of his journey.
He has been serving as medicine cat for almost a year now, and has shown himself able. Though there are gaps in his knowledge of clan herbs and practices, what he doesn't have he makes up for in the things he learned from the mountain cats. Perhaps most noticeable, Sparrowflight seems to be truly happy, settled in his own skin in a way the cat had never been before.

RC Medicine cat blurb: Sparrowflight is an eclectic medicine cat who takes much of his training from The Tribe of Rushing Water, the cats in the mountains. Most of his knowledge comes from practical use, as he did not have a proper apprenticeship. He strongly believes clan lines should not exist for medicine cats, and has a deep reverance and respect for StarClan. |
