[attr="class","reason"] [attr="class","reasonbg"] [attr="class","reasonbod"]Another restless night stirred Tansystorm to her paws, promptly leading her out of camp and on another, impromptu, patrol. The moon's inability to fully penetrate the pines of ShadowClan territory brought the she-cat comfort on many nights, as she skulked through it's jet stroked scenery, pleased by the invisibility such gloom birthed. With her pelt, the darkness consumed her, save for the sheen her tansy-toned eyes occasionally let off.
The night was full of the normal music: frogs and crickets, with the soft bristling of the pines overhead. The needles beneath her paws remained unbroken, as her trained stride floated over them and through the familiar lands. She enjoyed such swift journeys at night, as they brought her busy and lonely mind a much needed distraction.
What is that scent..?
When the gray coated she-cat found her paws nearing the border edging ThunderClan's territory, she'd find an unfamiliar aroma wafting through the air. Shortly after, a whimpering was heard; it sounded distressed, pained. It was not a cat. Nor any type of prey she had known. But what could that mean? Was it an injured two-leg? An unknown beast?
Slowing her stride down, Tansystorm shifted her posture to a stalk, as headed near the thunderpath border. Her soft blond pools widened, allowing the moonlight to enhance her night-vision as she neared.
What she saw was unexpected, and saddening. It was a dog welp, laying on her side of the thunderpath, crying out from what appeared to be a twisted leg. It was not much bigger than an kit nearing apprenticehood. She wondered if it's mother was near, but surely if it had been, it would have turned back for it? She tested the air just to be sure, trying to distinguish another canine scent over the stench of the thunderpath, but she discovered no such smell.
As no sign of it's mother was around, she paused a second to think, do I save it? Is it worth the risk? She could hear no monsters on the road, near or far.. yet they were notoriously fast, but even so.. surely she could manage to drag the poor kit-dog six tail-lengths this way?
Sighing, the she-cat moved forward, her paws leaving soft mud behind as she walked atop the cooled surface of the thunderpath. The pup saw her approach and it's whimper intensified, but the she-cat ignored it the best she could as she latched her maw onto it's scruff and tried to drag it to safety. It was heavier than she had expected, however – no larger than an apprentice, but it's bones must've been quite a bit thicker. Trying to learn all the herbs and their usages had sent Swallowpaw's need to perfection igniting. She had to prove herself not just to Chaneterellegaze - which, if she was being honest, she struggled to know what the she-cat was thinking -, but to her Clan as well. Therefore, in her own little way, she had decided the best way to learn was to study as much as she could, murmuring herbs and their uses under her breath. After a while, the mutterings had taken on a beat of their own. Unfortunately, her studying had woken up some ShadowClanners and she had left camp in order to escape the exhuasted irritation. The night air felt cool, as it rippled through her fur, and she let out a soft sigh. Her paws felt heavier with every step, but she pushed herself forward; she knew that even if she went back to her nest, she would twist and turn with her worried thoughts. Therefore, wasn't it best if she stayed awake, just for a little bit longer? Her steady recitation sticattoed when a sharp cry from and owl rang out in the quiet pine forest. She kept herself low to the ground whenever it screeched and she squeezed her eyes shut, her words stuttering together in a hurried breath. When the owl had quieted down or flown away, Swallowpaw would stand up straighter, a bit shaky as she did so, and carry on. " -webs for bleeding. Poppy seeds for sleeping. Borage leaves for- Borage leaves..." Swallowpaw stopped her walking, grimacing as her mind ran a blank. With a frustrated sigh, she smacked her paw on the ground, her tail lashing back and forth. Though as quickly as the irritation flared, it faded in a dull ache of weariness. Her tail drooped. Was she ever going to get this? Perhaps it was time for her to head back to the camp. Just as she was about to turn around, a loud whimper made her pause. She tasted the air, before turning her attention towards the thunderpath; it had to be coming from that direction. While hesitating for a moment, she crept forward towards the sound in the end, keeping to the dense forest of trees. As she padded forward, she swung her head this way and that, her ears pricked, just in case of a twoleg, monster, or any predator appearing out of nowhere. Though as she reached the source of the sound, she froze and her eyes widened. " Tansystorm?" Her attention flickered to the mass that the warrior was dragging. A... dog? In her frazzled delirium, she believed that Tanstystorm had killed the small mutt and was dragging its corpse back to camp. The stories are true, she is a force to be reckoned with! The overwhelming feeling of absurdity almost made her start giggling right then and there. ShadowClan had its own resident dog killer! But as Tansystorm continued to drag the dog, Swallowpaw took a closer look at it and noticed it still breathing. She let out a strangled yelp and stumbled backwards, her fur fluffing out. " Tansystorm, it's still breathing! What're you doing?" She glanced over her shoulder to see just how far the two were from camp. Should she rush back to camp to get someone to help? The dog looked young enough to still have a mother, what if its mother came rushing back, spittle flying everywhere. Swallowpaw felt lightheaded at this thought and swayed a bit in her choking fear. [attr="class","reason"] [attr="class","reasonbg"] [attr="class","reasonbod"]'Tansystorm?' The unexpected voice set Tansystorm's fur to bristle, as she temporarily dropped the welp's scruff to turn and find the source. It was Swallowpaw, the Medicine Cat's apprentice. She looked absolutely horrified and takeaback by the scene that was before her, evidently fearful of the dog and the potential consequences it came with.
“Calm down. It's just a welp.” Her ear flickered as the roar of a monster in the distance began to touch her ear fur. “Stay back!” Her teeth sought the pup's loose skin once more, her muscles flexing beneath her coat as she jerked it faster across the thunderpath, scuttling backward despite it's horrid cries as it's twisted leg thumped against the black face of the ground. She wasn't sure why she was saving the creature despite the risk it put her own self at, but it was young enough to deserve some leniency wasn't it? A dog might not show a kit that mercy, but, she was no heartless beast.
The monster roared by the opposite side of the road just as she and the pup entered the safety of the forest's softer terrain. She dropped it immediately, a heavy sigh pushing through her tightened chest.
“What are you doing out so late?” She snapped, frustrated that the young she-cat had startled her. But before long she would calm herself, knowing that her stress had been more geared toward the thunderpath monster, rather than toward her actually being angry with the young molly. “I'm sorry.”
She glanced toward the whimpering pup in it's pathetic state, her pelt heated with concern. It was a dangerous thing to have around, especially since it's mother could be near – albeit she could not scent it in the least, and as far as she had known, dogs weren't nearly as loyal as clan cats were to their kin. “Do you have anything to help with it's pain, so that I can take it near a two-leg place?”
She knew such a journey would be exhausting, but the farmland further down the thunderpath would likely have a high chance for a two-leg to stumble upon it during sun-high. Besides, it wasn't that far. As the monster thundered across the path, Swallowpaw flattened herself low to the ground. Time seemed to slow down, as Tansystorm struggled to the bank of ShadowClan territory. Although every bit of her wanted to help the warrior to make sure that she wouldn't get hurt, she was rooted to the ground. Once the monster had passed on, she could hear her heartbeat thrumming in her eyes and she shivered. Her eyes closed and snapshots of what could've happened or been if Tansystorm hadn't made it off the thunderpath flickered through her mind. She could dimly hear the warrior's voice and she opened her eyes, trying to focus on what she was saying. Swallowpaw flinched from her harsh tone of voice and took a small step back. " I couldn't sleep," she admitted. Her voice was soft from exhaustion and fear of drawing the warrior's ire to her. Never before had she spent time with Tansystorm; the she-cat always seemed to be active, their paths had never crossed. Well, until now that is. She gave the dog a side-eyed glance, just in case it decided that now was the time to attack. Another fatigued giggle almost bubbled out from her; this was ridiculous! Struggling to maintain herself, she addressed Tansystorm. " I decided to take a walk instead of fidgeting in my nest and then I stumbled upon you with the..." She swallowed, her nervous gaze turning back to the whimpering mass. All at once, the hysterical laugh died on her tongue and she couldn't stop shivering. This was a dog, one that, when it got older, would come charging at them without a second thought. Therefore at Tansystorm's suggestion, Swallowpaw gasped, her ears flattening against her skull and her fur fluffing out once more. " You want to help it?" Swallowpaw's voice was a squeak at this point. " Don't you remember what happened to Thistleheart a couple moons ago? Those vicious dogs-!" Another shiver ran up her spine. Had Tansystorm lost her mind? " Why in StarClan's name would you want to help a- a dog?" She glanced over her shoulder, almost expecting another one of their clanmates to pop out from the dark forest, shouting, " Surprise!" This had to be a prank.

[attr="class","reason"] [attr="class","reasonbg"] [attr="class","reasonbod"]Tansystorm supposed she couldn't take back her anger, but it pained her to see the apprentice draw away from her with it. Tonight was proving to be all sorts of trouble, wasn't it?
'You want to help it?' As Swallowpaw went on, Tansystorm couldn't help the sway that went to her ears. It was certainly unusual, but.. surely it was stranger still for a future Medicine Cat to not feel compelled to help the helpless?
“The Warrior's Code speaks of saving kits, even if they are not from here. Likewise those kits could belong to another clan who may, one day, grow and kill one of our own during a border scuffle. How is this any different? It is a helpless, injured child. And yes, it may grow one day to cause damage. But I can't just.. look away when a suffering youth is crying out for help.” The previous spite that had been in her tone was entirely dispersed now, replaced by a solemnity. But the disappointment in ears were apparent with their posturing.
Nonetheless, she wouldn't push the careless apprentice to do something that went against her code. “Go home, then. You're of no use here.”
She took the pup in her maw again, tentative as she strained her neck to rise it higher off the ground and slow as she began to tred down the side of the thunderpath, heading toward the farm lands ahead. With no imminent threat nearby, she was able to go at a turtle's pace, an attempt to spare the twisted leg from taking too many hardy thumps against the ground. Even so, the pup was in audible distress, it's cries heart-wrenching to the evidently soft she-cat. Swallowpaw whirled around to find Sagepaw half-submerged within a bush. Relief in seeing her friend trumped her surprise at the apprentice's sudden appearance. " Sagepaw! Thank StarClan you're here," Swallowpaw purred. Although intending to greet Sagepaw with a friendly nuzzle on the cheek, hesitancy in how to act around her made Swallowpaw pause; was it normal to greet a friend with physical affection? Or was this more of a situation where a nod was more appropriate? She wasn't quite sure if she was allowed to initiate that sort of thing; after all, there first outing had been just a couple days ago. Were they...friends? Or just acquaintances? Her ears felt hot as she realized that as these thoughts swirled within her head, the moment was gone. Disappointed in herself, Swallowpaw cleared her throat, trying to move past that heavy feeling in her stomach. " I happened across Tansystorm with the dog just a couple minutes ago. From the looks of it, it appears as though she's attempting to help it. One of its paws appears to be twisted, I can only guess from one of those foul monsters." Although a couple foxlengths away from the thunderpath, the hot smell of it made her gag and she closed her eyes in an attempt to quell her roiling stomach. Turning back to look at Sagepaw, she continued, " I offered to help with the herbs I could gather." At this, she perked up, her ears pricking forward. " Actually...hey! You would mind helping me out with finding these herbs, would you? I mean, since you're out here already I just thought that you'd be OK with it," Swallowpaw hastily added, giving a weak laugh. Swallowpaw gestured with her paw deeper into the pine forest and continued, with a small and amused twitch of her whiskers, " This time we won't be heading into the marsh, thank StarClan. We just need to find some branches and some cobwebs to hold the twisted leg in place. And maybe along the way I can remember which herb would help with the pain...." Her voice trailed off, as her gaze drifted to stare off into the forest, a frown appearing. sagepaw | the friend squad is off on another adventure!! i'm so proud of them

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]sagepaw hadn’t expected much when she had been trailing after the young medicine cat apprentice. all she had wanted to do was scare the she-cat, especially after that stunt she had pulled at the marshes; it was only fair. but when she had taken a few different turns, ending up near the thunderpath and coming across her aunt -and a very injured dog lying between them- sagepaw just couldn’t find it in her to turn around and go home. her curiosity easily took the reigns, overshadowing any sort of rational thought she could have produced. technically, she was supposed to be working on her training techniques back at the camp, but she quickly decided that this was far more exciting than any old hunting methods would be.
as soon as she saw what the two were all up in arms about, sagepaw quickly moved to hide herself from either of their views, noticing the swallowpaw’s nervous nature had been making her glance around. a keen eye would’ve caught the ungraceful apprentice, but luckily neither swallowpaw nor tansystorm had seen her scamper about in search of a hiding spot. she knew that her aunt would have her tail if she were to be caught this far away from the heart of their territory.
as she watched the scene play out, it looked to her that the two she-cats were going to try and salvage what they could from the situation, hearing swallowpaw direct tansystorm to move the whimpering animal away from the road. she then saw the younger cat walk-off, in what looked like very deep thought, near to where she had been immersing herself in the thick foliage of some overgrown shrubs.
she took this as a good time to announce herself, knowing that swallowpaw probably wouldn’t give her location away so easily. swallowpaw! hey!, she quietly called from the bushes, moving slightly to ruffle the leaves a bit to garner the she-cat’s attention. sagepaw then finally left her secretive spot, taking a few steps out but still kept the back half of her body submerged. she gazed at the other apprentice and with a slight tilt of her furry head, she asked what are you guys going to do with that dog?

[attr="class","reason"] [attr="class","reasonbg"] [attr="class","reasonbod"]Swallowpaw's follow up was surprising. Tansystorm respectfully halted for her younger clanmember, her sunflower orbs turning upon the young molly's reluctant facade as she offered help and advice. “Very well,” she muffled through the mouthful of dog fur, a brief nod given as she switched direction toward said cluster. And with that mouthful of dog fur and a nose assaulted with canine aroma, she failed to catch another pesky scent on the air..
Once safely out of sight from the thunderpath and the surrounding open areas of the woods nearby, she'd softly settle the pup down. It's whimperings were still permeating from it, a look of fear in it's own eyes, reflective of Swallowpaw's own. With Swallow gone, Tansystorm decided to show the pup even more softness ,as she curled around it and began to lick between it's ears, hoping to bring it some comfort.
At first it quaked, but soon the creature reacted as she had hoped, and it's cries began to soften despite their continuance. She thought it was sad, for it to be both injured and separate from it's mother. Was it still on the teat? How long had it been parted from her? With all the questions now free to swirl in her concerned mind, she shuddered with anxiety.
Sometime she couldn't help but to curse her own capacity to care. Swallowpaw whirled around to see Sagepaw half submerged within one of the bushes nearby. Relief at seeing her friend trumped her surprise in the apprentice appearing all of a sudden. " Sagepaw! Thank StarClan you're here!" Swallowpaw bounded up to her, a loud purr rumbling in her chest. Although she had wanted to greet Sagepaw with a nuzzle on the cheek, she hesitated, her mind all of a sudden scrambling to figure out the proper social etiquette for their relationship. Was it too bold of her to assume that they were friends after one adventure together? Or were they still acquaintances? As someone who didn't have close friendships as a kit, Swallowpaw was unsure as to how to act in this sort of situation. She soon realized that she had hesitated too long and the moment was gone. Disappointed in herself, Swallowpaw forced herself to not slink back into the night out of embarrassment, ignoring that sinking feeling now in her stomach. Clearing her throat, she said, " I just found Tansystorm with the dog just a couple minutes ago. Just from looking at it, it appears as though it has a twisted leg. If I had to guess, I think one of those foul monsters caused it." Despite the fact that they were a couple foxlengths away from the thunderpath, the acrid smell still made her gag and she had to close her eyes and turn her head away from it to calm her roiling stomach. Turning back to Sagepaw, she continued, " I promised Tansystorm that I'd go and look for some herbs while she stays with the dog." At this, she perked up, her ears pricking. " Hey! Would you mind going and looking for herbs with me? I mean, as long as you're OK with it! I just assumed that since you were out here, you wouldn't mind..." Swallowpaw's words trailed off and she ducked her head. " If you do want to, this time we're going to head deeper into the forest, instead of going into the marsh. We're going to be looking for small sticks and cobwebs to bind the twisted paw. While we walk, I can perhaps remember an herb to help with the pain..." [attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]a bright, beaming smile flew across sagepaw’s lips as she watched swallowpaw bound towards her. she was happy to have not frightened the nervous she-cat, but then again some revenge for that toad mishap would have been slightly more satisfying for her. the half tabby cleared her throat and went on to answer sagepaw’s question, filling in all of the missing information - connecting major dots. her eyes fell unto the hard asphalt of the thunderpath with her ears slowly flattening against her skull, grimacing at the danger of it; all of the lives it had probably taken from cats who lived long before she did. the usual suspect, she internally spat as she gave the dark path a narrow-eyed look - death by thunderpath monster must have been the absolute worst way to enter starclan, to sagepaw at least.
quickly removing the hard glare from her eyes, sagepaw turned back to refocus her attention as swallowpaw continued speaking. something close to a scoff bubbled at the base of her throat with them, in disbelief more like at the notion that tansystorm was nurturing the poor animal and keeping it company while the two apprentices dilly-dallied in the bushes. you left tansystorm with the defenseless dog?! she exclaimed with now widened eyes, moving a bit from where the other apprentice stood to try and see where her aunt was - only catching a few tufts of her familiar gray fur from where she had placed herself, but she didn’t dare venture too far out of her hiding spot.
she calmed down a bit, not seeing anything too alarming, and looked back at swallowpaw. she quickly agreed to assist with gathering some herbs with an eager nod of her head. i can’t help you identify, but i can definitely help pick em! she jeered, walking past the she-cat just close enough to where her long fur made soft contact with the short hairs of her side. anything to speed it up. im sure tansystorm isn’t too excited about babysitting
sagepaw, being who she was, immediately started off into the treeline of the forest but quickly came to a stop. she realized, in seconds, that she had no real idea where to start looking for whatever herbs swallowpaw had mentioned just a few minutes before. maybe it was time for her to sit back and allow someone else to take the reins - only because she wasn’t as knowledgeable about this topic. not like swallowpaw. with another smile, sagepaw quickly sat herself down and glanced back at her clanmate. cmon then. there’s no time to waste!

At Sagepaw's exclamation, Swallowpaw jumped, eyes widening. She hadn't considered that Tansystorm would do anything to the dog; in fact, it appeared as though she was more concerned with ensuring that the dog was safe instead of hurting it. But Sagepaw was related to the fearsome warrior, maybe she knew something Swallowpaw didn't? For a moment, the she-cat considered if she should make her way to where the warrior and the dog were, but Sagepaw seemed to confirm something and relax from her outburst. At Sagepaw's comment of Tansystorm's displeasure of watching the dog, Swallowpaw nodded. " Good idea, we shouldn't be out later than we have to," she murmured, glancing up at the sky. She wondered how she was going to explain to Chanterellegaze as to where she had been for the night if it dragged on too late. As she glanced back down, she realized that Sagepaw had taken off towards the tree lines and was waiting for her. Scrambling after the other apprentice, Swallowpaw called back, " Oh! Yes, of course, of course. Let's go!" Yet again, envy of Sagepaw's eagerness and tenacity for just doing, instead of waiting around for others to tell her what to do became a bitter taste in Swallowpaw's mouth. Their previous adventure hadn't ended in a sudden transformation within herself; instead, what they ended up with was just embarrassment and empty paws. But maybe tonight would be the chance for some kind of rebound; after all, if Swallowpaw ended up helping the dog, then perhaps she could have some notoriety! " OK, so. What we're looking for are some sturdy twigs and cobwebs to bind the leg. I don't feel comfortable realigning the leg - I haven't reached that training session, yet -, but if we manage to at least bind the leg, then there won't be so much shifting," Swallowpaw rattled off, her brows furrowing as she thought. As the two walked deeper into the pine forest, she swung her head back and forth, trying to hurry it up. She let out a mraow of satisfaction as she noticed a small bunch of fallen twigs nearby a clump of pine trees. She bounded up to it and starting sorting through them. Finding a couple that seemed sturdy enough, she called out to Sagepaw, " Try and find some cobwebs. The more the better. It's fine if you ended up breaking some, just as long as we have a bunch, I'll be able to bind the twigs to the leg." While she had been collecting the twigs, a certain sense of peace had washed over her; she knew this, she knew the steps and procedures on how to bind something with twigs and cobwebs. It had been one of the first training sessions she had gotten. She could do this!

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]sagepaw allowed her clanmate to explain her thoughts, giving out a small list of things they needed in order to help the young puppy with its injury. sturdy twigs and cobwebs, got it she called, already heading off in a different direction in order to begin her search. she heard swallowpaw’s excitement over finding some twigs, and with a small sigh sagepaw knew that she would be expected to find the webbing.
she flicked her ear in discontent, beginning to peek around the base and roots of the trees - spiders were bound to make their homes in the darker portions of the pine forest so sagepaw was hoping to find some that way. as she made her way around another tree, she noticed a gleam in the sky above her. it was a larger-looking web, beautifully made at that, stretched between a split in the tree. it was easy enough for her to climb up and reach, but sagepaw opted to find something to attach the web to instead of slinging her paws about.
i found a nice web, in a tree a bit! she yowled, hopefully, loud enough for her companion to hear from where she was in the wood. before she did anything mouse-brained, sagepaw took a moment to scan the area - finding a small stick that she could use to gather the webbing without getting the sticky strands all over her. she grabbed it between her teeth and placed her front paws upon the tree trunk, stretching out her neck in order to reach her prize. once she had gathered enough, completely destroying some poor spider’s home, sagepaw dropped to the ground once again and made her way back to where she had left swallowpaw.
i got some web! hopefully it’s enough sagepaw struggled to speak as she carried the stick back to her clanmate, making sure not to let it fall from her mouth. after continuing to struggle with voicing her thoughts, sagepaw finally just sat and awkwardly placed the stick between her paws to hold it. gross… anyways, shall we go back now? she asked, peering back to where they had come from - knowing that she’d have to now face her aunt as well as that poor dog. hopefully swallowpaw would be able to, at the least, help the dog with its injuries - and maybe after, tansystorm would let her keep it. it was a crazy idea, but sagepaw felt that simply dropping the puppy off near the twolegplace would be more dangerous than just taking it back to camp with them.

Even though it was a small task, it made her feel more in control as the two apprentices met back up. She had done this time and time again; she knew how to bandage an injury. Though now, she supposed, there was that fear of her patient being a dog. Tansystorm seemed sure that the dog wouldn’t bite, but there was still that dread that made her paws feel like lead, as they trekked back to the dog. “ Last I saw, Tansystorm moved it off to the side. Hopefully we’ll be able to get some cover from any twolegs or their monsters rumbling down the thunderpath.” Swallowpaw just barely suppressed a shudder at that thought; the idea of being interrupted in helping the small dog by a twoleg screaming and shouting at them made her hackles rise. She had never personally encountered a twoleg but from the stories she had heard, they were quite the nuisance. Turning to glance at Sagepaw and speaking around the twigs in her mouth, she asked, “ How comfortable do you feel with getting close to the dog? I want Tansystorm to calm it down while I’m bandaging its leg up-” Here, she couldn’t help but think, We also need to ensure that if it starts attacking, we have a strong warrior to take it down. She hardly doubted she and Sagepaw could take it, twisted leg or not; a dark look crossed her face. Swallowpaw cleared her throat and continued, “ Since the injury is its back leg, I need someone to help me move the uninjured legs away from it. Would you be OK with doing that? If not I understand.” Although she didn’t want to put Sagepaw in any situation that may lead the other apprentice to be hurt, she also knew that speaking this fear aloud to her friend would start a disagreement. And, quite frankly, Swallowpaw was too exhausted from starting anything. As they reached both Tansystorm and the dog, Swallowpaw called out to the warrior, “ We’re back. We have twigs and a cobweb to help. Tansystorm, would you mind calming the dog while I work?” There was that one last wary look at the dog, as she paused, before she pushed back that rising fear that was screaming at her to run.
