[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]when sagepaw had been named, becoming an apprentice of her clan, she had internally cheered and her chest had swelled with pride as she was finally making progress to becoming an adult - but when she was introduced with her mentor, well, those feelings of happiness had dwindled down into apprehension and anxiety. it had now been a few days after the ceremony, and those feelings still hadn't quite yet subsided.
it wasn’t that she hated badgernose or thought badly of him, but she had heard many things floating around camp about the tom. and while normally sagepaw wouldn’t let the bad words of others make decisions for her, she couldn’t help but piece some things together when she had seen the expression on his face as the announcement was made. he had curtly told her to be ready at dawn and that seemed to be that - sagepaw would be up and about before the sun had even tried to show its face in order to appease her new mentor. their pairing was set in stone, and while she admired the cat for his warrior status and the love he shared for their clan, she dreaded the thought of having to be taught by such a difficult cat.
of course, she did spend many moments in the den trying to figure out a way to avoid the dark-faced tom - but she had seemed to already be in a bad spot with him so sagepaw felt that it would be better for the both of them if she at least showed up to their first lesson together. after participating and playing nice for a bit, she’d probably find different routes to take in order to get out of whatever boring training he had planned for her.
it all seemed a bit convoluted to sagepaw, the apprentice stage itself felt unnecessary and took far too long in her opinion. she would’ve rather just taken her warrior name as soon as her sixth moon came along - it was something she felt she deserved. im capable enough, there’s just no point in waiting she had concluded as she dragged herself from the den, stepping out into the darkness.
she had quickly spotted the dual-colored warrior in the distance, sitting close to the thick treeline, slowly walking over to make her introductions to the tom as a show of good intentions. she huffed a bit before finally reaching him, letting out a quiet mew, a soft little good morning sir
she felt that if she was nice and respectful to badgernose, then maybe he’d go easy on her - a plan that she wholeheartedly expected would work in her favor so she decided to quickly pile on to her earlier greeting. im really excited to see what you have planned for us today! i know you probably have something very educational in mind, they were very sweet words - enough to cause a toothache - but she knew that they were laced with early morning grogginess and lacked actual substance. hopefully, the tom would look past her weak attempts at being friendly as sagepaw knew that they both had a long day ahead of them.
[attr="class","boatbottomt"] sagepaw is not ready™

• B A D G E R N O S E •It must have been a shock to the whole clan that Hazelstar would choose Badgernose to mentor an apprentice. The warrior himself was taken back. He had no interest in taking on an apprentice at all, in fact he still doesn't want an apprentice and though he made it clear that he had no intent in ever mentoring an apprentice. This would mean he'd have to deal with their constant babbling about being the best warrior and their never ending complaints about wanting to do more advanced techniques. Perhaps Hazelstar wanted Badger to form a bond with his clan mates and gave him an apprentice instead of another warrior. The black and white had told his new apprentice that they would be going out at dawn. The warrior did not really have any expectations for his apprentice. In fact, he dreaded even having one in the first place. However, Hazelstar had entrusted the young cat's training to him, and Badger had no choice but to obey the wishes of the clan leader. It was almost dawn when Badger awoke from his sleep. He had no desire of getting up, but he remembered that he now had an apprentice. Great Starclan help me . He muttered under his breath. Rising carefully and silently from his nest, Badger weaved his way around sleeping warriors until he was able to slip out into the camp clearing. He padded over to the camp entrance, taking note that the fresh-kill pile was looking low as usual. He sat down and waited. A few moments later he heard someone approaching. He turned and saw Sagepaw who quietly mewed a greeting. Badgernose snorted and rose to his paws completely ignoring her greeting. “Let’s go, we’re wasting time already.” The warrior flicked his tail signaling the gray apprentice to follow. He silently led the way into Shadowclan’s pine forest territory. The tom sniffed the air from time to time, his ears always pricked up and alert. When he had led them to a quiet spot, he sat down, curling his fluffy black tail over his paws. “You’re going to learn how to hunt,” he meowed. “Now let’s hear what you know about the basics of hunting. What must you always take into consideration when hunting for prey?” Badger was a skilled hunter, which is why he decided he would teach his apprentice how to hunt first. He would be able to teach the young cat how to hunt quickly to get the basics done, then he would be able to focus on battle training. The young warrior remembered the first day his mentor taught him how to hunt which during that time, he had already some knowledge of hunting since that is what his mother had taught him while he was in the nursery. The black and white tom was hoping that even if his apprentice had not learned much about hunting, that she would at least be able to use some logic to figure certain techniques out. Tag: // sagepaw

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]to say that sagepaw was taken aback by the tom’s directly abrasive tone was an understatement. sure, he wasn’t too keen on her (or anyone, for that matter) but she at least expected some sort of boring pleasantries - at least for their first meeting. nonetheless, with her ears slightly fallen as they expressed her minor disappointment, sagepaw adhered to his snippy command and quickly padded after him.
she noticed his expert movements, the way his ears were constantly twisting around - always listening to the environment around him. she differed in that her ears were limp against her head, probably from all of the nerves she had built up in preparation of her first training session. it was a big day for her, she supposed, but sagepaw knew that she would rather be still fast asleep in the den.
when badgernose had seemingly found a good spot to pause and begin her lesson, he lowered himself into a sitting position. he payed little mind to where sagepaw put herself, so she sort of just moved to the side and angled herself to sit slightly in front of him. it was probably an awkward position, but sagepaw still faced his front and she felt that that was all that mattered.
her ears stood straight as he told her of his plans, a hunting lesson. your strong-suit, that makes sense, she thought as he began to quiz her on her knowledge about the subject - which, unsurprisingly, wasn’t a lot. her mother had been far too busy making sure she stayed alive and safe, as sagepaw was always finding different ways to escape the nest, so she simply had no time to give any tips or tricks on hunting or fighting. sagepaw would do her best to answer her mentor’s question, nonetheless.
well i suppose that finding prey would be the most important right? she gave him a slight head tilt, gauging his reaction to her words for a few beats of time before continuing with her list of actions. ... following scents and dung trails, i guess. she realized that what she had said hadn’t quite answered what he was truly asking, so she tried once more. besides that, i feel like making sure you don’t scare off what you’re hunting is equally important as well. it was a bit vague but sagepaw felt a lot better leaving the question behind after she finished speaking her thoughts.
she hoped it was a suitable answer for badgernose, the one he had been looking for. they had started on the wrong paw already and she was internally praying to starclan that her inexperience wouldn’t make her mentor give up on her completely, or try to get her re-assigned. it sounded like a good answer as she came up with it in her mind, but reading the black and white tom sitting before her was one of the hardest things she would probably ever have to do.
[attr="class","boatbottomt"] lol sage knows barely anything about hunting techniques but oh god is she going to try and impress badger with all her heart

• B A D G E R N O S E •Huh, the apprentice clearly had a point about finding prey first but Badgernose was less than impressed. This was going to be a longer lesson that the warrior had wanted or wished. The tom just sat quietly listening to his apprentice's answers. She had a good few points, but none were the answers that he was looking for. "Yes, yes, it's important to find prey first, but a only a kit would answer the question like that." Badger flicked his tail against the ground, clearing away some pine needles. The black and white cat looked down at his apprentice, amused nor content with Sagepaw's answers. While she was close to what he was looking for (kind of), he didn't want to hear an answer that all kits could come up with if asked the same question. "The wind," he went on, "the wind is one of the most important things to consider when hunting." Badger didn't bother letting his apprentice try to figure out the answer, The warrior didn't want to waste time and just wanted to get this training session over with, but at the same time he knew that he should be giving Sagepaw a chance or else his apprentice may complain about his mentoring to Hazelstar, who in turn would probably ask Badger to go to her den to have a talk. Maybe if the young cat complained, Hazlestar would reconsider the pairing and the warrior would be free, though he highly doubt that would happen. Hopefully, his apprentice would have a better answer for his next question. Shaking his thoughts, Badgernose glanced back at Sagepaw, "could you possibly tell me why we need to consider wind when we're hunting?" His tail lashed back and forth impatiently against the ground, flinging pine needles around. . Tag: // sagepaw

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]sagepaw couldn’t believe it, her answer had been semi-correct! she realized that getting excited over this fact wasn’t fully appropriate so she kept her excitement to herself this time, as she realized that badgernose really had no patience for her antics for now. he had given her a backhanded compliment of sorts, but it had little effect on her - for she was closer to being a kit than to being an adult (so in her mind, she was technically in the right). though, her mentor’s blank stare continued to make her feel uneasy with the situation. she hoped that they could get right into demonstrations rather than this face to face interrogation.
as he went on to explain the correct answer, or the one he had initially been looking for, sagepaw tried her best to listen intently to his words. due to her childishness, her mind had twisted it in a way that told her that she had been right from the start. she unknowingly gave him a bit of a look that read isn’t that kind of what i just said...? but she didn’t dare express her feelings out loud - badgernose would probably skin her alive. or not, she doubted that being in his presence was dangerous.
she noticed he drifted a bit, but she chose to sit still and await the next round of questioning he had prepared for her - though she would rather have left the scene by now. as he seemingly got himself back on track sagepaw squinted her eyes at him and his pointed tone, but sagepaw felt that she could defeat whatever negative thoughts he had about her. she was quick to give her next answer. prey could easily smell us if we disregarded it, her words were full of self-assurance and confidence, she was sure that this was what he had been looking for. but something ate at her consciousness, what if i get this one wrong? - would he wring her neck for her foolishness? probably not, but the way his tail had been hopping around didn’t make her feel any better about it.

• B A D G E R N O S E •The grim looking tom nodded, approving of Sagepaw's answer. At least that was a decent answer... Badgernose rose to his paws and padded over to his apprentice. He circled her a few times, before pausing in front of her, his the warrior's green eyes boring into his apprentice's. After a few more seconds of silence he turned away again, stalking to the center of the small clearing. She seems to have the potential of becoming a fine hunter. Let's see if she'll become as skilled as me. He thought as he turned to face his apprentice again. "Alright, let us begin. I will be teaching you a basic hunter's crouch. Follow along. For this crouch, lower yourself close to the ground, so that your belly is nearly touching the forest floor. Keep both your front and back legs bent. Your tail should be low, but not too low that it is brushing against the ground. Badger crouched down low, his long black fur brushing against the pine needles beneath him. He kept his legs bent , his tail straight out and lowered, but high enough that his long tail fur would not drag along the earth. Turning, he waited for his apprentice to follow along. "Now, can you tell me why we have our legs bent and our tails low, but not low enough to touch the ground?" The mentor questioned his pupil. The black and white tom had plans for his apprentice. Though he was still not stoked on the idea of having to teach the young cat, he may as well make her the best hunter or over all best warrior in the clan. Of course, this would benefit the clan, but at the same time this would feed into his ego. He'd be able to show off to his clanmates that he was able to trained the best hunter in the clan, at least the next best hunter. Tag: // sagepaw

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]sagepaw sat and awaited badgernose’s judgment to her answer, only to end up getting a quick nod. her eyes scanned his face, catching nothing, and all she could think of was how absolutely frustrating it was to sit in silence with the older tom. she knew who he was, she knew a bit about how he acted with other clanmates but she wasn’t expecting it to be one hundred percent true. with her own personality traits, sagepaw didn’t know how much longer she could take before she burst in a fit of emotions. listening to the sweeping of the soft breeze and the life in the pine wood waking up around her was torture because all she really wanted was to talk… to badgernose… or really just anyone who was willing to sit and listen - or anyone she cornered, to be completely honest.
her ears tipped up as her mentor finally gave her an insight to what she would be working on - basic techniques. oh my stars, she felt her shoulders droop a bit at the thought but quickly realigned them as she remembered that badgernose probably wouldn’t appreciate her early onset reluctance to participate - it would be disrespectful, she quickly reasoned. her green eyes stuck to the tom’s body movements, watching as he shifted into the crouch with ease. sagepaw quickly scrambled to her feet, attempting to mimic his movements - she felt his eyes scrutinizing her every move, it was utterly terrifying to her. she wanted so badly to impress him and she knew that if she wasn’t able to pull this simple stance off, he’d give up on her before they even had a chance to proceed.
just as she felt herself getting into the crouch, bending her legs and such, but her tail had seemed to develop a mind of its own as she attempted to straighten it per badgernose’s teaching. it was her nerves manifesting, at the tip of her tail, to taunt her but she wouldn’t let this little speed bump cause her any more embarrassment. it took a few heartbeats, but her body easily slid into the crouch and hopefully she had perfectly replicated the move to badgernose’s standards.
sagepaw continued to hold the crouch, even as her mentor continued quizzing her. she took a moment to think about her answer but it seemed easy enough to her. even in a low position, we still need to be able to move quickly right? she went with, tossing a question of her own back at the older tom. maximum pounceability from down here, came afterwards in a quiet murmur -her own little joke- but the stray thought still slightly connected to her initial response. oh and stealthiness! she quickly added, turning to give badgernose an opened mouth grin. she was extremely pleased with herself and how easily his teachings were sinking into her mind. maybe this training thing wasn’t so bad after all, but sagepaw knew she would still rather be somewhere else.

• B A D G E R N O S E •Badgernose’s green eyes trained on his apprentice, carefully observing as Sagepaw attempted to mimic his pose. For the most part, the warrior was fairly impressed that the young cat was able to somewhat replicate the hunting pose he had demonstrated, however it wasn’t enough to satisfy him. While her paws were correctly positioned, the apprentice’s tail was not at ease. She’s bound to scare off the prey even before they smell her. He thought as he stood up from his position. Before he could say anything, Sagepaw had already steadied her tail. Relieved that he did not have to waste any time to help her correct her tail, he gave her a slight nod. Turning his attention to his apprentice’s answers to his questions, he found them not perfect, but not as bad as her previous answers. He circled her as she held her position, using his tail to point to Sagepaw’s legs, “Yes, we keep our legs bent so that we’re always ready to pounce on prey, in addition, you want to move lightly on your paws. If you’re too heavy on your paws, you’ll lumber around like a badger and scare off all the prey.” His tail flicked towards the apprentice’s tail, “Keep your tail low, but not too low, and keep it as still as you can. If you drag your tail on the ground, your prey will hear the rustling of leaves or pine needles before you even move a muscle.” Badgernose paused, catching his breath. This was probably the most he has ever spoken to any cat. He hated it. It couldn’t be helped. He couldn’t teach his apprentice unless he explained everything, which meant more talking. Badger pulled away from his apprentice and sat a few tail lengths away, “Alright, now pretend you’re stalking prey. Remember, step lightly.” The warrior wanted to see how the young cat would do without any more of his guidance. Tag: // sagepaw

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]she felt herself still as badgernose circled around her posing form, feeling the hard stare of his analytical eyes upon her body - her stance. he began to speak, adding on to her answers and elaborating on them in order to feed her more information. at his words, sagepaw’s focus drifted towards her fur covered paws, lifting her left one a bit in order to fully examine it. light on the paws… it was a lingering thought, one that she probably shouldn’t have spent so much time on. either way sagepaw put her paws back onto the ground and repositioned them to badgernose’s high expectations.
then, he mentioned her tail - the obvious obstructor in sagepaw’s learning. she had managed to wrangle it the first time around but she could tell that it was going to become an issue later on. the thing had a mind of its own, one that she had to squash and kill before it ruined her life. she wanted to be a warrior, not the apprentice who allowed her own tail to hold back her training - how embarrassing would that be?
no dragging… got it! she voiced, giving badgernose another beaming smile even though she knew he probably wouldn’t return it any time soon. her eyes followed after him as he stepped back a bit and sat himself a fair distance away from where she stood, directing her to showcase what she had just learned. she took a breath and steadied herself.
it was there, right in front of her - an earthy colored lizard with a stumpy tail and wild eyes, an unnatural animal but sagepaw’s mind was unnatural in a way as well. with her body in position, low to the ground and without a wily tail to worry about, sagepaw stalked towards her ghostly prey with - hopefully - light pawsteps as per badgernose’s teachings. once she felt that she was close enough to pounce, sagepaw began to hesitate.
am i supposed to pounce as well? like is this a full fictional hunt or just stalking? she broke the silence with her questions, a confused look floating across her face as she abruptly paused and turned to look at her mentor. sagepaw could have definitely killed the fake prey, as her pouncing abilities were quite good in her mind, but would badgernose have wanted that?

He was only interested in seeing if Sagepaw could use what she had just learned and put it into practice. The warrior narrowed his eyes as the young apprentice began to move. Her movements seemed to be very stiff, but at least she isn't lumbering around nor too heavy in her pawsteps. The apprentice did a fair job for her first time, he thought, before pausing and saw that Sagepaw's gaze was focusing on something in front of her. Badger blinks a few times before realizing that there was a lizard resting in the clearing, only a whiskers away from his apprentice. As his apprentice moved closer and closer to the reptile, he saw her body tense in hesitation. The warrior wondered if she would make a move and attempt to catch the creature, but to his disappointment, the young cat turned around to ask questions. The black and white tom watched the reptile jolt then skitter away to safety. He turned his attention back to his apprentice, shaking his head, "You hesitated," he meowed pointedly, completely brushing over the young cat's questions. He nodded his head towards the direction that the lizard had retreated to, "it cost you." "I don't have to instruct you to do every little step. Just follow your instinct." The tom's green eyes bore into his apprentice. "Moving on, you did fairly well for your first try. You were too stiff, You want your body to relax so that you can move around easier. You tense up when you're ready to leap onto your prey." The warrior was willing to let his student try again as he used his tail to sweep up some pine needles into a pile. "Let's see you try again."
