[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]cmon swallowpaw, they said it was this way!
sagepaw had been pushing the young apprentice around since the sun had set, sticking closely to the plans she had made for the evening. she had heard from one of the warriors, who had heard from another warrior who had supposedly heard from yet another warrior, that something magical had been occurring in the forests around them during the past few nights - and sagepaw hadn’t been able to shake the idea of checking out whatever those crazy cats had been talking about. she was easily influenced by these sorts of rumors, especially ones that just seemed so far-fetched, and it had taken up the rest of her afternoon from just how obsessive she had become over it.
touched by starclan, how bizarre is that she thought, a curious look crossed her face as she padded through the underbrush of the pine woods. there were fallen needles and cones everywhere, and she made sure to mind her footing as she led her treasure-hunting partner to their prize.
she was a bit surprised to see swallowpaw following after her. they were barely acquaintances, having only really met each other a few times throughout their short lives. she was also an apprentice, just as she was, but sagepaw knew that she was being taught by the clan’s revered medicine cat, chantrellegaze, and not by one of the other warriors like her own mentor - so they had never really crossed paths. not that sagepaw ever hung around the medicine den much either, besides this one time, as she was lucky enough to not need to be treated as often as some of the other cats did. her immune system was strong like that.
nonetheless, sagepaw had been nearby when she had forced one of the warriors to tell her everything about this “supernatural” spot and she had noticed that swallowpaw had seemed to take an interest in it as well. she remembered catching the she-cat off-guard to confront her about this one in a lifetime opportunity, asking the apprentice to meet her near the borders of camp after the sun disappeared over the horizon if she wanted to accompany her with this mission - and now here they were, out past dark to investigate this unbelievable rumor.
they said that the area practically lights up with spirits! that the ancestors all gathered around the marshes to - her enthusiastic labyrinth of words were cut short as she came to some information she didn’t exactly know much about but she continued her run-off sentence anyhow - well, i don't really know why, she paused a bit to glance at the white splashed cat behind her with a sheepish expression for a few beats of time before quickly returning to her normally animated headspace and urging the cat on some more. but they said that we couldn’t miss it so come on!
her movements sped as her emotions kicked off even more, excited to experience something as otherworldly as what they were hunting for. soon, the solid ground of the forest would spread out into flooded marshland and sagepaw knew they would be going back to camp soaked and muddy - but that seemed to be a small price to pay to see the sacred spirits of their predecessors.

Making a rash decision wasn't very like Swallowpaw to do. Personally, she liked to think about the alternatives and decide after thinking everything over. Sometimes, however, the possibilities whirled around in her brain so much so that she was left engrossed in her own thoughts for hours upon hours. It was easy for her to get in her own head. Though when she overheard Sagepaw talking to one of the warriors, her interest in that specific rumor piqued. How could she not be gripped after hearing about the particular marsh within their territory? Touched by StarClan." A shiver ran up her spine at that prospect. She had made her own conclusions, in that if StarClan had in fact touched this one spot, then perhaps it was a gateway in communicating with them. Countless ideas buzzed in her head as her imagination ran wild with what she would ask StarClan first. Despite her excitement, however, she wasn't able to rival that of Sagepaw's own eagerness. As soon as Swallowpaw had been caught listening, Sagepaw had latched onto her interest and asked - no, demanded - for Swallowpaw to come along with her. Truth be told, Swallowpaw wasn't one hundred percent sure as to why she needed to come with Sagepaw, but the other apprentice had been quite persuasive (re: dogged) in her askings. And how could she say no to one of her own clanmates? And so, there Swallowpaw was, struggling to keep up with Sagepaw's boundless energy. " I wonder, do you think this is a way for them to give us a message?" Swallowpaw asked, straining herself to keep pace with Sagepaw's bounding, " If it is, we could be the first ones to make contact with them!" After all, if others before them had gone to the spot and had met with the StarClanners then, wouldn't they have heard about it by then? " Do you think we'll need to prove ourselves? Like some kind of test? Oh, I hope they don't ask us to prove our strength," Swallowpaw groaned, her ears flattening against her skull, " you can take that one, Sagepaw, if they want us to push or claw something." Swallowpaw paused, letting her pawsteps stop, as she glanced around and tilted her head to the side. " Uh...just a question. This looks like we're heading towards those old twoleg houses... Would StarClan be this close to twolegs like that?" She gave a weak chuckle, before continuing, " But you're the one who was chatting to that warrior, you'd know where we were heading, right?" sagepaw | the best kinds of adventures always start with a "are we going in the right direction??" do not change my mind

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]a message? sagepaw’s left ear twitched and turned to face behind her as she took in swallowpaw’s question. maybe… but i thought they only gave messages to medicine cats. her statement trailed a bit as swallowpaw continued her own thoughts, beginning to show close to the amount of excitement that sagepaw was exhibiting about the situation. we wouldn’t exactly be the first to make contact, but we’d probably be the first apprentices! she was sure to include the differentiation between the two - sagepaw was confident in making the assumption that they were going to set records with this little excursion. she was sure that they would be revered for their courage and “strong ties” to the great starclan.
her visions of fame and fortune were interrupted with swallowpaw’s worried words, a test of strength? no, i don’t think they care much for muscle power was her ultimate conclusion, but sagepaw still became very aware of the lethal weapons she carried concealed within her paws.
she knew that she couldn’t carry all of the weight in the event that their ancestors asked to see their brawn so she made quick work of deflecting swallowpaw’s light compliment. no, i feel like they hold knowledge to a higher standard than brute strength - and as far as i’m concerned, that’s your area of expertise, she giggled a bit at the thought of the spirits asking swallowpaw to name off herbs and different medicines, knowing that her fellow apprentice probably wouldn’t have any trouble with the request - it was what she was being trained in after all. it would be better than having to spend her energy entertaining starclan with a workout routine.
sagepaw was prepared to begin jogging in order to skip past all of the boring moments of their investigation, but she noticed that her clan-mate was struggling to keep up. maybe she had gotten too ahead of herself, probably, so she slowed her quick trotting down in order to match swallowpaw’s steady pacing. but when the she-cat stopped, sagepaw continued on - a bit confused but she wouldn’t let this little hiccup stop her from seeking what they had gone out to find.
were they heading towards the twoleg homes? swallowpaw’s questions caught up to sagepaw in seconds, and they caused her to second-guess herself about the path they had taken. of course i know where we’re going, swallowpaw, sagepaw gripped what little reassurance her clanmate’s words gave her - but in truth, she had no idea where she had been leading them.
the marshlands couldn’t be so far away from the camp, it took up a great big chunk of shadowclan’s territory, didn’t it? either way, sagepaw made an abrupt stop a few steps away from her companion in order to peruse their surroundings, lowering herself into a sitting position while she did so. if the twolegs were this way… then the marshes should be that way she glanced to the left a bit and then to the right, ... or are they that way?
umm… sagepaw quickly dipped her head a bit to sniff at the dirt and debris around her, catching traces of moisture wafting from the soil. let’s head east she ultimately decided, standing to shake out her long fur before following her own advice. the marshlands shouldn’t be too far, just watch for swampy soil okay?, she glanced back towards the smaller she-cat for just a moment but didn’t let the worried look upon the apprentice’s face slow her down, she was soon back to her quick trotting - swallowpaw would just have to keep up with her.
[attr="class","boatbottomt"] sage totally knows where they're going >.> just trust her ok, she's doing her best ;---;

At the thought of being the one to impress StarClan, Swallowpaw gulped. " I-I dunno, Sagepaw, I did just start! Maybe we should go back to get Chanterelle..." Her voice trailed off as she realized that the other apprentice was forging on ahead. Nervousness gripped her stomach at the prospect of having to prove what she had learned; desperately, she tried to recall the training she had received. There was burdock, honey, and something that started with alder that she just couldn't remember. More terrified of letting Sagepaw know of her now blank mind than StarClan itself, Swallowpaw forced herself to continue forward; she couldn't let the other apprentice down! A quiet giggle bubbled out of Swallowpaw as she watched Sagepaw pause and glance this way and that. As Sagepaw bounded off ahead, the apprentice hurried in picking her own pace up. " Oh, I was just teasing you. I'm sure you wouldn't lead us into danger!" Swallowpaw called, the lie still heavy on her tongue. Although her voice was light, she glanced over her shoulder and hesitated, before turning back. She dug her claws into the ground, before sprinting to match her pace with the other's. " The marshes work fine for me, it'll be a nice break from the rough ground underneath. Besides, whatever path you're taking us on, I'm sure is the right one," she purred, brushing her tailtip against Sagepaw's shoulder. She just had to trust in her fellow apprentice! She was positive that Sagepaw knew what she was doing. The soft ground squished beneath her paws, as they continued forward. The coolness relieved some of the aches in her paws from trying to catch up to Sagepaw. Swallowpaw glanced at the other apprentice in the corner of her eyes, trying to gauge her. They had been acquaintances at best when they were kits, but that hadn't meant that Swallowpaw hadn't noticed Sagepaw. In fact, there was a small prick of jealousy at how easy it seemed for Sagepaw to befriend others; there was a certain ease and glow within her eyes that Swallowpaw had noticed when the other apprentice was in a social setting. Swallowpaw had hoped that during this adventure, some of Sagepaw's eagerness would rub off on herself. " Have you ever been this far out from the camp, before?" Swallowpaw asked, trying to gauge just how much the other apprentice had learned against her own training. There was a desperate need for Swallowpaw to be on par with her fellow apprentice. sagepaw | Sage is just trying her best and I love her so much oml

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]hearing that her slight joke hadn’t passed as easily as she thought it would, sagepaw felt a bit guilty of possibly directing starclan’s attention unto the apprentice trailing behind her. she knew that swallowpaw wasn’t the most outgoing of cats, it reminded her of her own sibling, so she sympathized with her hesitance - but she also wasn’t going to allow it to cancel her plans.
it wasn’t the first time sagepaw had roped some poor unsuspecting cat into doing something so intrepid like this, especially if it had something to do with leaving the camp area. sagepaw was just too restless to abandon the thought of adventuring so she continued to shrug off whatever apprehensions her fellow apprentice threw her way; sagepaw was confident that they could manage just fine without the watchful eye of swallowpaw’s mentor.
and hearing swallowpaw’s own confidence in her directing abilities, well, it had caused the she-cat to internally cringe. she may not have known just exactly where they were going at that current moment, but she knew where they needed to end up - the marshlands. hopefully, her nose wouldn’t lead them astray or else they probably would end up being placed under adult supervision. oh how badgernose would have a field day with that, her thoughts had become dry at the thought of the prickly cat who had been burdened with training her, but she quickly put herself back on track. starclan was much more important than some grumpy tom cat.
sagepaw heard her companion come up beside her, feeling the she-cat’s tail graze her shoulder as a sign of reassurance. sagepaw noticed that swallowpaw had seemed to put a lot of trust in her judgments, which could either work in their favor or terribly against them - it wasn’t quite clear which one yet.
she could sense her clanmate’s eyes on her, and to try and avoid any sort of awkward situation sagepaw kept hers locked on the path ahead; she couldn’t afford to be distracted or else she’d end up getting the both of them lost but she did continue to listen in on whatever swallowpaw had to say. well, not exactly was the answer she chose to go with, she then elaborated a bit more. i used to escape the nest a lot as a kit, though. the farthest i’d ever gotten was a few steps into the treeline around camp, i remember that i had been covered in mud and leaves! she side-tracked, giving a slight laugh at the memory of it - her mother’s eyes had been furious but her lack of outward aggression was far more frightening than anything sagepaw had ever seen before (not that she’d seen much by that time anyhow). my mother didn’t really let me too far out of sight after that; she said she was sick of having to clean me, sagepaw turned to give swallowpaw a faux-arrogant expression before adding, with a bit of haughty attitude, but don’t believe anything she says; she loved our bath time.
sagepaw was happy that swallowpaw had finally decided to catch up with her, actually managing to keep the pace with her own quick trotting. sagepaw glanced over to meet her eyes with a high smile, looking at the she-cat with a bit more respect than she had before. maybe sagepaw could overlook the she-cat's very obvious anxiety with the situation; im sure that'll change once we see the spirits.
the soil beneath her paws began to feel soft and soggy and she knew that they were nearing their destination. however, she noticed nothing out of the ordinary as they approached where the marshy area began; a heavy look of confusion took over her face. it seems pretty empty but… we should just keep going, i doubt starclan would be mouse-brained enough to hang around the entrance right?, she reasoned, her rapid paw steps continued with a fury - she and swallowpaw would find those pesky spirits sooner or later.

As Sagepaw talked, Swallowpaw gazed back at the trail in front of them. She seemed so sure of herself, knowing that she would lead the two to the right spot. How in StarClan's name did she do that? Despite her wishing to look back at the other apprentice - her mother had drilled it in Swallowpaw's head that it was rude to not maintain eye contact while one was having a conversation -, she mimicked Sagepaw's body language, hoping, deep down, that this was how someone became confident. However, she soon broke her mimicry to look back at Sagepaw, a loud purr rumbling in her throat. " It sounds as though you and your mother are close," she replied, her eyes squinting in laughter. " But why did you ever want to leave the camp, though? Wasn't it more safe to be inside?" A faint sound memory of an owl screeching flickered in her ear, though she took a deep breath and focused on the reality in front of her. " You could've waited until you were an apprentice to sneak out of camp, couldn't you?" Swallowpaw glanced at the she-cat in the corner of her eyes, before turning her gaze to look around the marsh. The area was quiet, save for the slight buzz of insects. A shiver ran up her spine; this was her first time this close to a bog and it was eerie at just hushed it was. Her throat dried at how normal this marsh looked, but she gave an affirming noise in the back of her throat at Sagepaw's insistence. Yes, it would be odd if StarClan had touched a spot that was too close to the start! She stopped walking and surveyed it, trying to spot anything; although she had never come across a spot touched by StarClan, she had an inkling that the two of them would just know where the spot was. It would be odd if it didn't look like it was star-touched, after all. Maybe some glowing here and there? But the marsh was large and Swallowpaw's stomach dropped. Would they be able to look everywhere for this one spot? What if it was a small speck, hidden within the reeds and grasses. Sighing, she shook her head, as she watched Sagepaw continued forward. Swallowpaw gestured with her paw to the right of the bank. " Should we split up?" She called to Sagepaw, " There are a bunch of weedstalks blocking our view. Maybe we could cover more ground if you take one half and I take another? O-of course if you think that's a good-" There was a rustle in one of the large rows of grasses nearby Swallowpaw and she yelped, startled. She scrambled over to where Sagepaw was, putting herself behind the other apprentice, her eyes wide. " What was that?" She hissed, trying to make herself be as small as possible, " do you think it's one of those marsh monsters? The ones who gobble up kits? Oh, StarClan we're doomed!" sagepaw | you know, dave the swamp monster!

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]was it rude of sagepaw to not look at her clan mate while she spoke to her? she noticed that swallowpaw’s eyes were glued to hers, or as well as they could be sagepaw kept her head facing forward. nonetheless, she responded to swallowpaw’s soft words with little hesitation. we’re not extremely close, she said, shrugging at the implication. my mother’s far more attached to my sister than anything else. she’s the baby of the family, yknow? even though we’re from the exact same litter., she finished with a slight roll of her eyes.
it was an usual statement to hear as normally other cats didn’t care to know about sagepaw’s familial relationships. her mother and her sister were practically bound at the hip and sagepaw watched from the sidelines - or from wherever she had run off too to escape her “boring” childhood. she wasn’t close with her father, or even her aunt for that matter. the thought of it had never bothered her much; not until swallowpaw said something about it, but even then sagepaw didn’t let it get to her. they were here to investigate a rumor, not indulge in clan drama (unless, of course, if one of them happened to bring it up later on).
tuning back in, sagepaw continued to answer swallowpaw’s seemingly endless inquiries. there’s always more to life than a comfy den, swallowpaw she deadpanned, giving the she-cat a funny look. there’s just too much to see, too much to do. i just chose to start early her paws began to sink slightly into the damp soil of the marsh, soon it would become mostly water with only small islands of wet dirt for them to stand upon. she couldn’t wait to get shoulder deep in it, if that was where they were to end up of course.
while swallowpaw stopped to examine the land, sagepaw went ahead - as per usual. but after a few steps she stopped to look back at the she-cat with a wandering thought and a soft sigh, you think too much, there’s no time to waste swallowpaw. but then again, she did bring up a good point, however sagepaw felt that splitting up could open many routes for possible danger. there could be anything hiding around this place and with two young apprentices? we’re a prime meal.
before she could open her mouth to voice her thoughts aloud, sagepaw was thrown into a flurry of white fur and fearful yelps. swallowpaw had heard something, placing the blame on marsh monster - the fur along sagepaw’s spine rose in seconds as the other she-cat sped to hide behind her. it wasn’t something she had expected to see from the seemingly collected apprentice, but after sagepaw had calmed herself a bit from the shock of it all, she pointed a great bellied laugh at the poor little cat. there’s no marsh monsters here swallowpaw! she sputtered out between giggles, we’re not going to get eaten okay? quit freaking out. look it was just a little toad. sagepaw gestured to the slimy creature as it scurried away from the loud cats.
ahh that was a good laugh, but we still have work to do - sagepaw moved to bump her shoulder against swallowpaw’s as she continued on. she decided to root out the places that didn’t seem worthy of her ancestors, probably the dry spots if they’ve chosen to congregate in the marshes of all places. she glanced back at the fearful she-cat with another sly grin creeping across her lips, i say we hit the wettest parts first, eh?

For a second, she could see Sagepaw's fur spiking with fear at Swallowpaw's exclamation and her eyes widened as the two waited with bated breath to see whatever would appear out of the grasses. However, embarrassment washed over Swallowpaw as Sagepaw started laughing, pointing that the thing Swallowpaw had heard was just a frog. Her ears felt hot and she ducked her head, the fur along her spine rippling. For a brief second, she sent a plea up to StarClan to create a hole for her to fall into. Feeling more like a frightened kit than a dignified medicine cat apprentice, she couldn't look at the other apprentice. " Please don't tell anyone else about this," she whispered, finding the marshy ground to be quite fascinating all of a sudden. She couldn't believe that she had been that scared over a small frog; this was what happened when she tried to take charge, she just made herself look foolish. It cemented her nervousness around leading - from now on, she'd let Sagepaw decide what they should do. A little flicker of warmth blossomed in Swallowpaw's chest, as Sagepaw bumped her shoulder with her own. At least it didn't seem as though the other apprentice was going to lord this over her; in fact, Sagepaw seemed to have moved passed it almost as soon as she was done laughing. Swallowpaw finally met Sagepaw's gaze as the other apprentice made a suggestion. " Sure, that works for me," she replied, as she stood. Her tail still between her legs, she padded next to Sagepaw. " It's just ahead of us, right?" Swallowpaw asked, gesturing with her paw to a spot a couple foxlengths away from where the two apprentices stood. It seemed a bit "marshier" up there; it was surrounded by a thick layer of grasses. " Do we just shove our way through?" She hated how confused and disoriented she sounded; she had never been this far out from the camp. In fact, this was her first time out this deep within the marshes; her father had told countless stories of monsters that lurked deep within ShadowClan territory. For a while, Swallowpaw had believed him. Though from Sagepaw's reactions, she was starting to think that he had just made them up. And at that thought, she felt even more foolish than she had before; of course the tales were made up! Right then and there, she made a promise to herself that she wouldn't tell Sagepaw about this; for the time being, it appeared as though the two were getting along. Despite Sagepaw's extroversion, there was a deep seeded loneliness that Swallowpaw could feel. Perhaps they both needed a friend. sagepaw | sage is just such a sweetheart omg

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]oh i definitely wont, she giggled at swallowpaw. she wouldn’t mention the she-cat’s cowardice, she decided that it was best left to become an inside joke between the two of them - for a later date, of course. sagepaw carried on as swallowpaw agreed to follow her lead, but even then swallowpaw continued to have concerns. yes, swallowpaw sage jutted out her head with a slight twist, a show of her slight tiredness with it. now shush; just trust me okay? she showed her teeth in a smile and turned to continue, quickly stopping short as a wall of tall grasses and reeds blocked their way. they were big enough to not be completely swallowed in the overgrowth, but sagepaw knew that they would have to keep their wits about them.
the thought of that, in and of itself, was entirely humorous to the young apprentice. if anything, sagepaw would be diving headfirst into the unknown - and she would definitely be dragging the more reluctant she-cat with her.
another grin, of a much more sinister nature, appeared upon her lips. her smiley attitude towards their current situation was overshadowing everything else sagepaw’s face was capable of expressing, and it was fun. no… no shoving - she softly mewed, turning to her companion to show off her devious smirk. tonight, we run! and with that, sagepaw started on her young paws and allowed the grasses to envelope her - fluff and all. she heard the marsh come alive with the sudden disturbance, a few birds flocked from somewhere around her in a flurry to escape the nonexistent danger.
she was sick of all the walking, the wasting of time - the nights of newleaf only lasted for so long and sagepaw knew starclan wouldn’t be waiting around forever for the two she-cats to discover their secret meeting place. she was raring to go and swallowpaw would either have to take the plunge with her or sagepaw would meet the other apprentice back at the campgrounds in the morning.
after a few moments, and a few quick rabbit-like hopping from sagepaw, she had found herself completely engrossed in slushed soil and wet grass - her paws sunk with each leap she took. she paused for a moment to look behind her, searching for her companion to follow out of the dark after her - she took that time to catch her breath a bit. don’t be afraid swallowpaw, it’s great in here! she called out into the grass, starclan is close, i can feel it!

Swallowpaw took a sharp intake of air, as Sagepaw's teasing. Her mind already whirled with ideas in what the other apprentice would say or do with this moment. But she shook it off, later she could worry about this - and oh would she worry. Now was the time to meet StarClan! Although she had prepared herself to make her way through the grasses, she hadn't expected Sagepaw's excitement. She gasped, as the she-cat rushed her way through the tall grasses and for a moment she stood there, blinking. Sure, she had heard of Sagepaw's energy but this was ridiculous! Sagepaw's voice sounded muffled within the grasses and Swallowpaw guessed that her companion was still within them. Steeling her courage, she dove into the grass. As the stalks swayed around her, she tried to hold in sneezes, the stems tickling her nose. Not looking where she was going, she almost collided with Sagepaw, though she stumbled to a stop before she crashed into her. They ended up face-to-face, as to where Swallowpaw had stopped. Their faces were close enough so much so that all Swallowpaw had to do was lean a kit's length forward and their noses would touch. She could feel Sagepaw's breath on her and she shivered; they were so close to StarClan's spot, she could just feel it! " Let's go," she breathed, turning to face ahead. Steeling her courage, she pressed forward. For a fleeting moment, just before she made it out of the thicket of grasses, Swallowpaw felt the rising excitement in her throat. But it all came crashing down, as the only thing she saw of the marsh was just that. Marsh. Her ears pressed against her skull, as she glanced around. " M-maybe it's not this spot! Maybe it's the spot over here!" She tripped over her paws in the process of bounding off to the left of the marsh, disappearing within another wall of stalks. For a moment, she continued, racing from grasses to grasses, her despondency becoming more and more frantic. Finally, she came to a stop, back to the first marsh, her tail drooping. " The spot...I can't find it." sagepaw | child's first disappointment rip

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]sagepaw was a bit taken aback when swallowpaw had slid to a stop right in front of her. she could feel the she-cat’s heavy pants upon her face, their noses probably could have touched if sagepaw hadn’t been paying attention. yes, lets go, sagepaw saw her clanmate change right before her eyes. she watched as a newfound courage overtook her clanmate’s previous nervousness and anxiety, and sagepaw was fully prepared to follow this new swallowpaw into the great unknown that was the shadowclan marshes.
though, sadly, whatever confidence had flooded swallowpaw’s mind had drained just as quickly as it appeared - even with sagepaw padding closely behind, acting as her support. as the frantic words left the she-cat’s mouth, all that sagepaw could do was stare - not even at swallowpaw’s panic. she had spent most of the night out searching for starclan, following some wild rumor, potentially putting not only herself but a fellow apprentice in danger with her crazed idea that they would be experiencing something all clan cats dreamed of.
no… no this can’t b-… this isn’t- she stuttered, an unusual turn around from her normally self-assuredness. she glanced around, tuning out swallowpaw’s rambling and hysterical probing of the marshes they still had yet to explore, in order to observe her current surroundings. suddenly, her eyes narrowed, just as the other she-cat finished her search, and charged with determination. this isn’t the end, she muttered to her clanmate through clenched fangs.
i didn’t skip a good night’s sleep for nothing! she called to her down-trodden friend, beckoning her to follow as she passed through another round of reeds and wild grasses. her paws sloshed with each heavy step she took, disregarding whatever sound or mess she was making. at that point, sagepaw was hell-bent on at least catching a glimpse of what they had come to the spot for. anything to let her know that their efforts weren’t futile.
as she trudged on, sagepaw saw something trickle across the airspace slightly in front of her, falling into a cluster of tall grass and weeds; it was a only few foxlengths away. she knew that her eyes weren’t mistaken. a soft speckle of light, different from the little illumination given to the area from the dark sky. it was starclan! they had given her a sign - they were on the right track! swallowpaw quickly, this way! sagepaw beamed, not even taking a moment to turn and acknowledge the other cat as she bolted towards whatever had been glowing within the marshes.

Throughout this entire journey, Swallowpaw had been holding on to that one hope that maybe, just maybe, this was true. Deep down, a small cynical part of her had wondered if it was just a rumor. After all, the most exciting thing that had happened to her and Sagepaw was that surprising frog; that just wasn’t story worthy. Quietly, she agreed with Sagepaw. Not only was this moment important - perhaps to show everyone back at camp that StarClan was there, ready to be a guiding paw - but it also ate into prime sleeping time. Swallowpaw wasn’t sure how exhausted Sagepaw felt, but just from watching the apprentices and their mentors go out for training, it made her whiskers droop in weariness. Frustration and embarrassment clawed at her throat, as she slowed her scampering. Even Sagepaw seemed lost and confused. A feeling of pity flickered in her stomach at the sight of the usually eager and confident apprentice reduced to confusion and uncertainty. She had half a mind to just call it quits, and head back to camp. If they returned now, at least all they’d have to deal with was being scolded for heading out without supervision; if they continued to stay out, trying to find this spot and came back empty-pawed, then there would be scolding and embarrassment. Swallowpaw was just about to open her mouth to say something, when Sagepaw interrupted her. If she was being honest, she probably shouldn’t feel as relieved as she did in that moment; she gulped in breaths, trying to steady herself from the wave of dizzied reassurance that everything was going to work out. Stumbling to catch up to Sagepaw, she forced herself through the weeds, holding in a sneeze as the grasses tickled her nose. “ How do you think we should present ourselves when we reach the spot?” Swallowpaw called up in gasps, struggling to keep up, “ I don’t remember there being a code of conduct when meeting StarClan.” As Swallowpaw burst from the grasses, for just a second, she was overwhelmed by the sudden light. Her stomach dropped as she caught her breath. She was standing in front of StarClan! She could feel- “ Wait a second- Those- Those are fireflies.” When she finally got a good look at the area, she almost let out a choked laugh. A large swarm of fireflies danced around the area, flying over to where the two apprentices were. Swallowpaw was surrounded by them, but she was too busy staring at the ground, shaking her head and muttering under her breath. In a better headspace, Swallowpaw would’ve found this to be gorgeous; the moon looked like a sliver of a claw in the sky, with the stars winking at the two apprentices. It felt like the stars, and perhaps the starry figures themselves, were chuckling at them. The marshes were filled with bugs buzzing and frogs croaking. “ Is this all there is?” Swallowpaw raised her head to look at Sagepaw, desperation in her voice. A wave of exhaustion flooded her and she sat down in the marsh, uncaring whether she dirtied herself. Until she had this hope snatched away from her, she hadn’t realized just how much she had banked on coming to this spot and meeting StarClan. “ I had so much to ask them.” Her tone was bitter and she turned to look at the swarm of fireflies, her ears pressed flat against her skull.

[attr="class","boatpict"] [attr="class","boatwrapt"] [attr="class","boatscrollt"]oh i don’t know she shouted back at her companion, keeping her brisk pace while she answered. i mean, hazelstar has never said anything about my conduct sagepaw had never had any issues when in her clan leader’s presence, though she was sure that she probably wouldn’t change her ways even if she did - even if her leader requested her to. hazelstar seemed to like her either way, hopefully. as her mind became occupied, sagepaw’s movements slowed and she saw swallowpaw dart past her out of the corner of her vision. shaking her head, sagepaw quickly caught up and emerged from the grasses a few beats of time after her clanmate did.
she heard a laugh come from the other apprentice, a confusing action, but her questions were quickly answered. f-fireflies? sagepaw’s eyes darted across the landscape, watching the lights flicker around the two apprentices. her ears fell a bit, disappointment quickly flooding onto her face. her eyes locked on to one of the brightly lit bugs flew past her face, the scent of it quickly running across her nostrils. wha- ? she felt as if the air had been stolen from her lungs, she couldn’t breathe. those warriors had lied to her, had made a fool out of her - and she was equally to blame for even believing them. the rug had been yanked out from under them and all they were left with were… bugs.
this was where starclan was supposed to be… she murmured, losing whatever bit of energy she had left. her ears flattened and she followed after her clanmate’s actions, lowering her behind to the soggy dirt. i’m sorry swallowpaw… i thought what those warriors told me was real with a sigh, sagepaw spent a few extra seconds on the ground before standing once again. since they didn’t find what they came to find, for the simple reason that it just didn’t exist, sagepaw had decided that it was time to turn in for the night - or what was left of it. i am going to give those warriors a piece of my mind… after a nice long nap her tail flicked in frustration as she huffed out the words. let's just go home she said as she turned to head back the way they had come from.

Swallowpaw watched Sagepaw – the one who was known throughout camp to be so energetic – with a mix of pity and exhaustion. The fact that Sagepaw also was feeling the brunt of this weighed heavy in her mind. Swallowpaw glanced at the lightning bugs, almost expecting a starry cat to come down and yell, “ Surprise!” With no other indication, the apprentice got to her paws, her tail drooping, as she copied Sagepaw’s movements. " No, don’t apologize, Sagepaw, it’s not your fault. I had a lot of fun on this adventure, if that makes you feel any better,” Swallowpaw murmured, ducking her head as she shuffled her paw on the ground. It wasn’t until she said it aloud that she realized that it had been fun. Sure it wasn’t what she had expected to happen, but at least she had been with Sagepaw during the whole event. Her stomach fluttered at that thought, before she flicked her ear, ignoring it and instead giving Sagepaw a loud purr. “ Let’s. I’m about ready to curl up in the swamp and go to sleep,” she replied, squinting her eyes as her whiskers twitched in amusement. With one last glance over her shoulder – it really was a beautiful place –, Swallowpaw pushed her way through the grasses, hiding multiple sneezes as the stems tickled her nose. She could see the moon hiding behind some drifting clouds through the grasses and she felt her heart drop. This would’ve been the perfect night for the rumor to be true… As they made their way out of the swamp, Swallowpaw suddenly added, “ I was being serious back there, about having fun. If you’d be OK with it, I’d love to go and explore with you next time?” Her voice was quiet and she pointedly did not look at Sagepaw as she said this; fear of rejection made her stutter her words out. “ Maybe next time we can go explore some place that doesn’t have a rumor attached to it? It can be our own little thing,” she added. In an attempt to make the possibility seem as good as she could make it, Swallowpaw’s words rushed together. She didn’t want this to be a one time thing. sagepaw | I can’t believe we destroyed our childrens’ hopes and dreams (‘:
