Lionstar

A pale ginger she-cat stepped out of the leader's den; golden eyes blinking against the sunlight. Dawn had arrived moments earlier, but for the first time in moons this she-cat was no longer a deputy and had no reason to rise before the sunlight to organize patrols. Pain squeezed her heart for a moment, recalling Dimstar's death days prior.

The old, wise former leader had been her best friend for many moons. Lionstar had diligently served beside the she-cat in utmost loyalty. Now, life seemed emptier without her, and sleeping in the leader's den for the past couple nights had felt foreign and out of place. The she-cat knew better. It was just another wound that time would heal over, but not without the complications of scar tissue. Nothing ever truly healed with perfection.

Lionstar stretched, still groggy with sleep, and gave a quick look around RiverClan camp. Her camp. Her eyes briefly glanced around for the ginger pelts of Goldenfur and Flameblaze. Neither of her two kits were in sight. Suppressing a sigh, the leader padded out of camp. She could use some company, but perhaps a walk could clear her mind instead.

The sound of the river's rushing waters grew louder as she approached the bank. Bird song filled the air, and Lionstar could feel herself become calmer by the moment. Stress and grief played with her emotions, but she couldn't let it show. She was a leader now, and had to be strong for her clan. They could never see her lose her composure, otherwise she feared they might lose faith in her.

As the she-cat padded down near the fishing bridge, she noticed she was not alone. A light brown, tabby tom sat on the bridge, staring down at the waters below. Lionstar walked over, approaching him. Maybe it would be nice to not have to spend this morning alone after all. "Vipereye." Lionstar mewed, dipping her head in greeting to him. "Fishing this morning? Care if I join you?" The two had never spoken much before, as two introverts of the clan. Now seemed as good of a time as any to get to know each other though.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]today was a great day for hunting. fishing to be more precise. vipereye loved fishing. it was calming and it allowed him to be away from ashblaze and his group of tormentors. falconfang and shadpaw and whiterose, he hated them all. they all deserved death, but vipereye wasn't going to be the one to do that. even though sometimes it could be so easy. they got close enough to him without fear anyhow. but to kill them would make vipereye just as bad as them and he already had blood on his paws that he didn't want. 

so fishing helped him to sort through these bitter and hateful thoughts. waiting, waiting for the day he could prove their guilt, of which they felt none. waiting for the day he could reveal their paw in the killing of more than one riverclan warrior. he couldn't wait for the day he could reveal them to lionstar. he couldn't wait for the day he could watch them fall. even if it meant he would have to fall alongside them. 

adderpaw's death was traumatizing to him. he would not forget. would not forget that ashblaze killed his brother. 

"vipereye," the voice shook him from his thoughts and he nearly slipped into the river. eyes wide, he turned to his leader and had to force himself to relax. lionstar was here to fish with him? he blinked in a small amount of surprise as the tension slipped away from his muscles. "uh... sure!" he said in his signature soft voice. it didn't used to be that way. vipereye had never been a loud kit or apprentice, but it wasn't until adderpaw's death that his voice dropped to just above a whisper. "i wouldn't mind a little bit of company. and... s-sorry, i was deep in thought and didn't hear you coming." 

he knew that ashblaze wouldn't like him to be around lionstar at all. there was the "slight" possibility that she would find out about ashblaze's past times from vipereye. but he wasn't really allowed to be around anyone, and so being around lionstar under her terms wouldn't get him into trouble... right? he had to play the part of a good riverclan warrior to keep up appearances.... right?

Lionstar

Lionstar laid down on the bridge next to her warrior, still waking up to the day. Rays of sunlight soaked into her pelt, warming and relaxing her, one of the first moments of comfort she's felt in days since Dimstar's passing. Grief threatened to plague her mind, and dismantle her composure, but she would not break character or image in front of anyone. Not even her adult kits.

The she-cat listened to the tom speak, her ears twitched as she picked up on the nervousness conveyed in his tone. Lionstar ignored his seemingly anxious behavior in her company. It was expected with the territory of being a high rank. However, she was not here to criticize or observe work ethic. There was nothing she needed more right now than company. 

"Relax, Vipereye." The pale ginger cat soothed, her eyes focused into the depths of the water. Below the clear surface, the glimmer of scales caught her attention. The river seemed plentiful with fish this morning. Their long, silvery bodies weaving through the currents in the water. 

"I'm just looking for some company. This moon has been particularly trying." Lionstar admitted, a thoughtful expression came over her face as she mulled over everything - good and bad. "Is something on your mind?"

he shivered one last time as his leader sat calmly beside him. vipereye was a jumpy cat to begin with, especially around other cats that weren't ashblaze. but recently, with coyotehaze at his side, his strength and confidence had begun to grow. he would have to tell lionstar about coyotehaze soon, but not today. if she wanted to have a relaxing time, then he would give her a relaxing time. there was no need to bring up stressful decisions now was there?[break][break]

breathe in, breathe out, he thought to himself as he turned back to the river where he was watching the fish. his heart was still pounding from the shock, but he didn't feel in danger anymore. in fact, it was nice... the calm and relaxing atmosphere that lionstar brought with her.[break][break]

it was a little strange to hang out with his leader, but if this was a consistent thing, then vipereye could get used to it. as she asked him if there was anything on his mind he took a moment to think about it. was there anything on his mind? well... there was a lot on his mind, but none that he would want to share with her. at least not about falconfang, shadpaw, or ashblaze. at this moment there was no point. he didn't have any proof and they were respectable enough cats.[break][break]

he turned to look at her and shrugged lightly after a few moments of silence. which of course was normal for vipereye. taking his time to think about what to say was his natural response. he wanted to respect the other cat with his words, it was just the way his mind worked. and not to mention he was quiet anyway.[break][break]

"lionstar, there's a lot on my mind, but most of it stress-inducing and i imagine that you didn't come out here to have stressful conversations." he said quietly. he didn't really know how his leader would react to that, but hopefully, she wouldn't ask for more. at least not now.

Lionstar

The pale ginger she-cat lay her head on her paws, her eyes fixed on the shimmering, sunlit waters below them. It was her first break since taking over the leader position days prior. The days were beginning to blend into each other; sleep was becoming a rarity. Lionstar closed her eyes, and gave a content sigh.  She was blissfully unaware of how little Vipereye was at ease compared to herself. 

"Lionstar, there's a lot on my mind, but most of it stress-inducing and I imagine that you didn't come out here to have stressful conversations." At that the she-cat opened one of her eyes to glance at him, with an amused smile on her face. For a moment she doubted he could fathom her stress, or what she was currently experiencing. However, she knew better than to assume her problems were any greater than his. In Dimstar's long reign as RiverClan leader, the wise, old she-cat had taught her much in terms of the importance of humility in a leadership position. 

It's okay. I'm not going to pressure you to tell me anything that you don't want to open up about." She reassured him softly, glancing back down to the river. Lionstar was grateful to be away and get out here. It was oddly soothing to step away from camp for the first time in days. "Just understand that anything you do tell me can't stress me out, I'm almost immune to it at this point. I care about my clan as much as I care about my own kits. If there is anything I can help you with, then I would like to, if you'd allow me."

The ginger cat didn't press the situation any further. She leaned one of her front legs into the water, feeling the cool water run between her toes. The fish below quickly darted in different directions, suddenly alarmed by her paw breaking the surface of the water. Although she had came by to fish, it could wait. There was nothing she needed more now than to relax and breathe, while enjoying the company of a clan-mate.
