all the pieces lie where they fell... ♥ It was a good day to be walking the moors. The sun was shining, melting what little snow remained after a late season fall, and green grass was starting to poke through. It offered the opportunity to really run, soaring over the hills just as WindClan cats were meant to. Coyotehaze stretched, just having finished grooming herself after a quick breakfast. She would be taking Doepaw out, and it would be a lie to say she wasn’t excited. Coyotehaze had always prided herself on being the best warrior she could (after all, her mother demanded it), and part of that role was training the next generation of cats. Doepaw was her first apprentice, and though she could be a little softhearted, Coyotehaze saw great potential in her. It was thrilling, being able to search for the skills of a cat and then help them bring those skills to the next level. “Doepaw?” she finally called, padding over to the apprentice den and poking her head inside, “Are you ready?” ooc:

• D O E P A W• Doepaw was resting in her nest, her whiskers twitching in her sleep. It had only been a few days since the young torbie was made into an apprentice. Since then she had been too excited to fall asleep. She always ended up staying up late at night just pondering what she and her mentor were going to do the next day. The cream, spotted she-cat had dreamed of her apprenticeship since her early days in the nursery. Her parents’ dedication to the clan has become a model for the young cat and she wished to be just as great of a warrior as they were. Maybe if they saw that she was working hard to become the best warrior they would take notice of her. At least, that’s what she is hoping.
Her eyes were still closed when she heard someone at the entrance of the apprentice’s den. Her ears pricked up and twitched as she heard a familiar voice. Groggy, due to her lack of sleep and also from just awaking, she blinked and opened her eyes. Her eyes widened as she suddenly recognized the familiar voice to be Coyotehaze’s. Doepaw leaped onto her paws, eyes sparkling with anticipation. The apprentice nodded to her mentor as the warrior asked if she was ready.Shaking her sleepiness away, Doepaw slipped out of the apprentice den to follow after her mentor. “What are we going to be doing today Coyotehaze?” she mewed. Would they be battle training today or would it be learning hunting techniques? Either way, Doepaw was ready to tackle today’s lesson.

all the pieces lie where they fell... ♥ Coyotehaze was pleased to see Doepaw rouse herself quickly, soon slipping out of the apprentice’s den with eyes bright with eagerness. To her surprise, Coyotehaze felt a tickle of nervousness in her chest. She’d always been confident, even as an apprentice, but there was no training or practicing on how to teach a young cat. Coyotehaze wanted to do her best for Doepaw, and for Windclan. “Perhaps a little battle training,” she told her ward with a smile, “But first, a lesson. Follow me.” With that Coyotehaze turned, trotting out of camp. She picked a brisk pace, loping over the moors until the early wind pulled on their fur and the sun was beating down warmly on their shoulders. She was taking them to her favorite place in WindClan territory, a high hill that looked out over their territory and much of the other forest. Reaching the top, Coyotehaze slowed, pausing to let Doepaw catch her breath if she needed it. “This is my favorite place in the territory,” she told the young cat, sitting and wrapping her tail around her paws, “But it’s also an important strategic location. Can you guess why?” She looked down, waiting for Doepaw’s answer. ooc:

• D O E P A W•Whiskers quivering, Doepaw did her best to keep herself from mewing in excitement. Battle training! The torbie didn’t really expect to be learning battle moves so soon. She had always thought apprentices always started with the basics of hunting. Eitherway, the apprentice’s interest perked up as Coyotehaze mentioned something about a lesson before they began training. Doepaw wondered what her mentor had in mind. The apprentice rose to her paws and followed after her mentor. She did her best to keep up with the quick pace that the warrior had set. While she trotted along, she looked around, taking in the territory. She loved the feeling of the breeze against her fur. The young she-cat was curious about where her mentor was taking her. For the whole time, she was trying to guess where they would be going and what the lesson would be. When the mentor and apprentice got to their destination, the apprentice immediately became in awe of the scenery. They were standing at the top of a high hill, she could see everything. She could see most of Windclan’s territory as it stretched into the other parts of the forest territories. “It’s beautiful,” she softly meowed as she tried to catch her breath. Doepaw gazed out, trying to take in everything that she almost didn’t hear Coyotehaze’s question. The she-cat eyes lingered into the distance for a while until she looked up at her mentor, “ Well… you could look out into the territory, so you can spot other’s from up here?” The apprentice tilted her head to the side a little, unsure about her answer. all the pieces lie where they fell... ♥ “That’s right,” Coyotehaze praised, a quiet pride rising in her chest. The young she-cat was smart, and could think outside what was expected. For a moment, Coyotehaze was distracted, thinking of what it might be like to teach a son or daughter of Vipereye’s in this way. “Look, see that way,” she went on, blushing lightly as she tried to refocus. Her tail gestured to the south, where a river curled and glistened, “RiverClan is on the other side of that river. It may be hard to see, but it’s noticeable when something is crossing the river, and the reeds ripple like waves when cats are moving through them. And there…” She nodded down the hills to the ShadowClan border. “There’s a twoleg path down there. You can sometimes see twolegs, and if they have a dog with them, it’s important to know. They can get off their leash, and they always come to the hills to chase rabbits…or cats.” Coyotehaze wrapped her tail around her paws, looking down at Doepaw once more. “Can you think of anything else you might look out for up here?” she prompted, allowing her time to think. ooc:

• D O E P A W •The young cat sat up straighter in her spot, puffing out her chest with delight when her mentor approved of her answer. She was lost in her own thoughts, wondering if this meant this was just one step closer to becoming a great warrior. Shaking the thoughts away she changed her focus to Coyotehaze's voice. Doepaw turned and looked out towards the direction the warrior pointed with her tail. She could see the river, the water glistening and sparkling in the sunlight before turning her head to face Shadowclan's territory. Though twoleg path was not in sight, the apprentice shuddered at the thought of a loose dog running around the clan territory. While she internalized all that information, she took note that she would stay clear of the twoleg path whenever she could. While it sounded like a fun adventure to go on, the she-cat did not want to risk losing her tail, or worse her life.
Doepaw looked around once more, wondering what else could be seen from the hill. "You could see prey from up here," she meowed, a hint of uncertainty in her voice. "You could also see cats who are traveling to the Moonstone from here right?"

all the pieces lie where they fell... ♥ “That’s true,” Coyotehaze nodded, “When the hares are kitting in their warrens, we can see where they gather. Moonstone…” She turned toward the hills where the stone stood. She had never gone herself, and only had her imagination to offer any sort of idea of what it might be like. “Medicine cats typically only go there by night,” she told Doepaw, “So they would be hard to spot. But a sharp eyed cat might have luck.”She lifted her nose to the sky, breathing in the air and watching the clouds rush over them. “The last thing I’ll point out is the weather,” she told her student, “Storms often brew to the north or west, and we need ample warning to make sure everyone in camp is tucked in tight. I remember as a kit one of my denmates was blown right off his feet by the wind.” With that, Coyotehaze stood, stretching and giving a wide yawn. “Now that we have that covered,” she smiled, narrowing her eyes at Doepaw, “Why don’t we do a little combat training?” ooc: doepaw

• D O E P A W •The young cat nodded silently, slightly disappointed that she had forgotten that medicine cats typically visited the Moonstone in the evening so it would be highly unlikely that they would be seen at all. Weather was not something the apprentice considered, so Doepaw made another mental note to herself that the hill was a great place to watch out for incoming storms. Her eyes widened at the thought of winds strong enough to sweep a kit off its feet. That must be a terrifying experience, but she wondered about what the feeling was like. Did it feel like flying? She shook her curiosity away as she suddenly realized that Coyotehaze had gotten up. The cream colored cat turned to look up at her mentor, perking up once more at the mention of combat training.
Doepaw rose to her paws quickly, grinning at her mentor, "I'm ready!" she meowed. "What kind of combat training will we be doing today?"

all the pieces lie where they fell... ♥ “We’ll start with something challenging,” Coyotehaze warned Doepaw. She knew what they would be working on was a little advanced, but if she could master it, then it would mean normal battle moves would come that much easier. She trotted a few fox lengths away, down the hill they’d been perched on. “WindClan is covered in open spaces and rolling hills,” she told Doepaw, “Though that means we don’t have much cover to battle under, it also means we have unique terrain to use to our advantage. Right now, for example…” She crouched down, blinking up at Dowpaw. “You have the higher ground, and your back is to the sun. From my position as an attacking cat, I struggle to see you,” she explained, “But you must be careful too. The slanted ground means you have to be wary of your stance, or your pounce will send you tumbling head over tail to the bottom of the hill.” “Learning to fight skillfully on a slope will mean almost sure victory against any non-WindClan cat,” Coyotehaze finished proudly, “Go ahead, and try to pounce on me.” She maintained her crouch, tail waving behind her. ooc: doepaw
